Frequently Asked Questions

If I apply, will I get an interview at the College?

Yes, we like to meet all students about what they would like to study with us so that we can make sure you have the advice and guidance you need. We are delighted to be able to invite you to an in-person interview at College and look forward to meeting you. You will have a email invite with the time and date of your appointment, and a text reminder in the day or two beforehand. If you have not provided both an email address and a mobile number, you will receive your invite by letter instead.

It’s the day of my interview and I’m not sure if I’m still interested in the course that I have applied for.

We would ask that you still attend your interview, which will be with a specialist subject lecturer from your chosen course. You will be able to talk through the course with your interviewer, and they may even be able to refer you to a different interviewer to talk through alternative course options or refer you for Advice and Guidance.

At my interview, I was offered a different course to the one I initially applied to. Do I need to update my online application to reflect the course I was offered?

There is no need for you to let us know; our Admissions team will be made aware of this and will update your course choices after your interview.

I’m not sure what course I was offered at my interview.

Your offer form contains your course information and sent to you by email. If you receive your offer form and you are still unsure, give us a call on 01392 400444 and we can confirm which course you were offered.

I have had my interview and been offered a place on a course; however, I think I may want to change my course.

You can update your course choice at any time. You can log into your online application and make the changes on there. If you submitted a paper application, email us on info@exe-coll.ac.uk. If you’re unsure about what course you would like to change to, you can have a chat with our College Advice Team by emailing cat@exe-coll.ac.uk, or call 01392 400600. You may need to attend another interview, and we will send you a new invite if this is the case.

I don’t know where to go for my interview.

Interviews are being held at our main Hele Road site, EX4 4JS. Our friendly and helpful staff will be here to greet you, and will advise you on which building and room your interview is being held in.

Please note, if you are taking part in an audition as part of the interview for your course then this will be based at the Centre for Music and Performance (CMP) or the Centre for Creative Industries (CCI). Your interview invite will specify the exact location.

What to bring.

It is helpful if you could bring:

  • a copy of your email/letter or text invite so we can direct you to the right team for your interview.
  • any evidence of your predicted grades from school (e.g. reports, mock exams etc). Please do not worry if you do not yet have these from school for year 11. We can talk through what you do have and what kinds of grades you are expecting.
  • if you are applying for an apprenticeship, your National Insurance number
  • a portfolio of your work (for example for art subjects) if your interview invite tells you to. You can bring photos of your work as well as originals.

Please note, for some interviews, your invite will include specific requirements of what to bring.

Can my parent or guardian come with me?

  • Yes, they are welcome too. If you would prefer to have your interview on your own, we have a cafe open serving free hot drinks if someone is bringing you and wants to wait there. Or there will be waiting rooms in each of the interview areas.
  • A reminder that there are no public car parking facilities on site and so if you need to park use the public car parks around the city or, where possible, public transport.

Exeter College recognises exceptional Apprentices and Employers at a sparkling awards ceremony

The Exeter College Apprentice and Employer Awards returned to celebrate some of the very best Apprentices and Employers across the country. This event honoured those that have shown an excellent commitment to their Apprenticeships, and the employers that have gone above and beyond to support these individuals.

Held at Sandy Park, the evening celebrated the achievements of 18 Apprentices and 4 employers, with two additional special recognition awards. The awards were expertly hosted by two of the college’s current Apprentices; Amy Kyme from Devon County Council and Brad Hardware from Radio Exe.

A talk from guest speaker Brendon Prince, founder of the water safety charity, Above Water, started proceedings. Last year, Brendon took on an incredible endurance challenge to stand up paddleboard the entire coast of mainland Britain, setting 5 world records in the process. The hard work and endurance shown within this challenge mirrored the winning Apprentice and employer ambitions and Brendon was an inspiring addition to the evening’s celebrations.

“The Apprentice and Employer Awards overflowed with Exeter College’s values of ambition, collaboration and energy. It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate our apprentice and employer success. A huge thank you and well done to our hosts, Amy and Brad, for leading the event so professionally with enthusiasm.”

Samantha Wilson, Head of Apprenticeships at Exeter College.

The event was made possible by generous sponsorship from Exeter College partners. This kind sponsorship allowed winners to be celebrated in a style that reflected their exceptional achievements.

Jasmine Amphlett, winner of Digital and Data Apprentice of the Year, said, “The Exeter College apprentice awards were a great experience! I was overwhelmed when I was announced the winner and it was amazing to be able to share that moment with my dad – who is also my boss – who I couldn’t have done it without! I extend a big thank you to my Exeter College tutor Kate Beale who was always so helpful throughout my apprenticeship.”

L3 Sporting Excellence Apprentice Meg Davies from Exeter Chiefs was given a special recognition award; Inspiring Apprentice of the Year. Meg has overcome many barriers and challenges to excel in her professional rugby career. Her success is evidenced by the fact she was unable to attend the awards evening in person as she was in Lisbon playing for the Wales 7s team.

Meg Davies shared, “I am very proud to have won this award. I would like to thank those at Exeter College that have helped and supported me over the last few years, including Ben, Morven, Nigel, Sam and many more.”

Devon Partnership Trust were awarded Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships. This glowing recognition was given to celebrate the trust’s exemplar Apprenticeship provision which has grown significantly over the years.

Luke Moss, Account Manager for Devon Partnership Trust at Exeter College said, “DPT are a fine example of how to fully utilise their levy. This is easily represented with their high calibre Apprentices and colleagues throughout the Trust. It has been a joy to behold how this partnership has developed over the years. We thank Paul, his wonderful team, the wider workforce and their Apprentices for all their commitment and outstanding achievement.”

Exeter College Apprenticeships continue to excel, having been awarded several awards this year from institutions including the Chartered Managers Institute and Associate of Colleges. Once again, the College has had over 1000 Apprentices start this year.

The college is still accepting applications for Apprenticeship programmes commencing this September. If you would like to find out more, contact apprentices@exe-coll.ac.uk.

Celebrating Love Our Colleges week 2021

Exeter College is once again celebrating ‘Love Our Colleges’ week – the national celebration of Further Education colleges across the nation.

Coordinated by the Association of Colleges (AoC), the nationwide ‘Love Our Colleges’ week; seeks to highlight the brilliant work that goes on in FE colleges.

For the first time, ‘Love Our Colleges’ week has a theme: ‘Get in, go further’, which aims to showcase not just all of the great things that happen in colleges every day, but also the journeys that colleges take their students on.

In the spirit of ‘Get in, go further’ here are ten recent Exeter College highlights that celebrate the journeys and progress of the college, its staff and its students:

  • Exeter College student and Syrian refugee, Khaled, has become a beacon of the community thanks to confidence gained by studying in the college’s Adult provision. Khaled, who came to Exeter without being able to speak English, has progressed through ESOL courses onto an Access to Business course, and is now aiming to go to university.

  • The college continued to build its relationship with Co Bikes and Co Cars, installing stations at both the Future Skills Centre and the Digital and Data Centre, providing staff and students with a sustainable way to travel across the city.

You can find out more about ‘Love Our Colleges’ and Colleges Week here.

Exeter College student becomes a beacon of the community

Exeter College student Khaled Deakin has slowly been building his profile and business within the community over the last four years, thanks to confidence gained by studying in the College’s Adult provision.

A Syrian refugee, Khaled arrived in Exeter with his wife in March 2017 speaking no English at all. With help from both Refugee Support Devon and Devon County Council, he enrolled on an entry level ESOL course at Exeter College, whilst also gaining a scholarship through RefuAid.

“My English became better and I moved from entry level to Level 2. I was thinking of studying social work because I had experience with Unicef before I came here”, Khaled said, but unfortunately he did not have the qualifications necessary to enrol on the programme. “I worked hard to get here last year but I didn’t have all of the qualifications. I then thought, why am I not doing another course?”

Khaled has worked tirelessly in the local community since arriving from Syria. He regularly runs exercise classes, helps at the local mosque and he can often be found volunteering his Sundays to distribute home-cooked Syrian vegetarian meals to homeless people in the city centre. As a result of his outstanding work in the community, a local food bank employee nominated Khaled for The Guardian’s ‘Guardian Angel’ series and he was subsequently contacted via social media by a journalist. His story was featured earlier this month.

Whilst being interviewed for the piece, the journalist asked Khaled about what would make his life in Exeter easier, to which he responded “a food truck, something to start a small business.”

“I had previously had a plan to open a restaurant in Exeter. I did a business plan with the Job Centre and other companies to get a loan, but because of the pandemic it fell through.”

Khaled Deakin

The journalist from The Guardian connected Khaled with a company that helps businesses start up and grow, and they helped both him and his wife (who is also a student at Exeter College) to achieve further qualifications in food hygiene.

With the process of getting his business started proving to be slow, Khaled decided to use his new qualification to enrol on an Access to Business course at the college with the aim of eventually going onto Higher Education at university.

“My dream is to manage my own business, which I’m going to start soon in Exeter. In the future, because of this course, it will help me develop it.”

Khaled

Khaled has set his sights high: “Maybe I will have a restaurant rather than a food truck, maybe I will explore outside of Exeter, in the UK or other countries. The Access to Business course will help me with this and with university in the future as well.”

“Staff at Exeter College are friendly and the teachers are really lovely people. They always help me and other students.”

Khaled

And Khaled was quick to recommend Exeter College to prospective Access to Higher Education students: “I recommend people to do Access courses. Higher Education is for life, for everyone. When you have a Higher Education Degree or Certificate you will get a good job, you will get a good salary, you will improve your life, other’s lives and the community as well, and you could make something special for you.”

Take the leap and learn more about our Access to Higher Education and our ESOL courses.

ACE League Fixture Match Report – Exeter College V Truro

Exeter College 31 v 35 Truro College

In a pulsating game that was full of action including 9 tries and some end to end rugby it was Truro College who came out victorious in a well deserved win that produced Exeter’s first loss in the ACE league.

It was the visitors that took an early lead with a penalty within the first 5 minutes, however for the next 15 minutes it was all Exeter College scoring 3 tries. The first try was scored by second row Ed Spurway. With the forwards rumbling forward from a lineout drive, the maul was stopped just short and Spurway was on hand to power his way over for the try with the conversion kicked by Harrison Greenslade.

Next on the score sheet was centre Jeremy Tuima. From a scrum inside their own half the ball was fed out wide to full back Charlie Groves who raced through to take the attack deep into the Truro half. The forwards then took it on driving closer to the line before the ball was spun out and Tuima forced his way between two defenders to score.

Straight from the kick off Exeter cleared their lines and forced Truro back once again and it was the Exeter College Captain Joe Bailey that claimed the 3rd try chasing the kicker and forcing the charge down and then having the wherewithal to chase the ball over the try line and dive on it to score.

This gave the home side a 17 – 3 lead but for the next half hour the game belonged to the Truro. A poor clearance from the hosts allowed Truro to exploit a gap on the blind side and claim their first try of the afternoon. With the conversion successful and Exeter’s discipline beginning to let them down Truro added a penalty and a further converted try to go into half time 17 – 20 up.

Truro extended their lead early into the 2nd half with a third penalty and a simple try from a scrum giving them a 11 point lead. At this stage Truro were showing Exeter how to control a game but the home side weren’t done yet. A turnover on the Truro 10 meter line gave the Exeter the chance they required and they worked hard to get close to the line for back row Ben Hobbs to burrow his way over. The conversion was successfully, kicked by Giles Clarke. Then possibly the big turning point of the game came when Exeter had an interception chance just outside their own 22 meter line but the ball ended falling to the floor and it was Truro who reacted first and picked up the ball to run in behind the post for their bonus point try and with the extras kicked it gave them a 24 – 35 lead with only 5 minutes to go.

Exeter College didn’t give up and went back down the pitch and a great line on the blind side from prop Tom Gulley, who is hard to stop that close to the line dotted down with a couple of minutes left on the clock. Clarke added the extras to make 31- 35 with the kick off to come. The hosts tried to work the ball up the pitch for the elusive winning try however a penalty on the half way line allowed Truro the chance to kick the ball to touch and claim the well deserved victory.
