Overview

Sharing expertise and resources with the University of Exeter, brought together by the South West Institute of Technology, we have developed a Level 6 Data Scientist Apprenticeship. The programme has been informed by research and insight from employers to bring new opportunities for a wide range of learners.

Level 6 modules:

  • Reflective practice, core mathematics and work-based projects
  • Introduction to probability, statistics, and data science
  • Introduction to databases, data sources, and ethics
  • Introduction to programming and machine learning

Year 2

  • Reflective practice and group projects
  • Statistical tools and modelling
  • Big Data and data science ethics
  • Software development

Year 3

  • Advanced data applications and data visualisation
  • Advanced statistics modelling, machine learning and Al, data science
    ethics

Assessment: To achieve the Apprenticeship, you will complete an EPA. This involves the submission of a portfolio of evidence and a test.

1 day per week/block delivery.

Degree modules will contain knowledge content for the Apprenticeship.

Portfolios will be completed in stages throughout the programme.

The End Point Assessment is integrated within the degree.

This Degree Apprenticeship has been designed by an employer trail blazer group through the Institute for Apprenticeships. Exeter College are committed to the ongoing development of our curriculum through the involvement of employer partners in the South West.

Entry Requirements

Equivalent to three A Levels (Including B in Maths) or following successful completion of the Level 4 Data qualification.*

GCSEs grade A to B in Maths and English, or equivalent.

*If you do not have these qualifications, you will be invited to complete a maths assessment. This is used to establish your current mathematical abilities and suitability for the Level 6 project content.

Facilities

Sessions will be delivered primarily by Exeter College staff in state-of-the-art IT suites. Students have access to Learning Resource Centres, IT support, and designated HE study centres. Teaching is delivered in small groups, meaning students will get high quality support during session time. Six weekly reviews with a dedicated Skills Officer providing pastoral, and on programme, support. Exeter College Apprenticeship Team provide advice and guidance for those coming onto programme.

The Digital and Data Centre at Exeter College is a purpose built facility, with its state of the art technology and classrooms. It was completed in the summer of 2021. The new centre at Exeter College provides a nationally significant and prestigious digital learning centre in the heart of the city. Complete with digital learning laboratories, state-of-the-art IT suites and interactive seminar spaces, learners have access to cutting edge equipment to help gear them to move directly in to industry or further study. The Digital and Data Centre is the home of a variety of employer-led curriculum programmes at different education levels with the aim of proactively meeting the skills challenges of the future in the digital sector.
