Overview

A Data Technician Apprentice will source, format and present data securely in a relevant way. They will communicate outcomes appropriate to the audience, analyse numerical and text data to support business outcomes, gather data from multiple sources as directed and apply legal and ethical principles when manipulating data. You will interact with a wide range of stakeholders including colleagues, managers, customers and suppliers, working as part of a team.

Who is this course for?

Choose this apprenticeship if you enjoy mathematics, have an interest in data patterns, possibly already work with spreadsheets or data regularly, and want to advance your career with data analytics.

What you will study

You will:

  • Source data from a collection of trusted sources in a secure manner
  • Collate and format data to facilitate processing and presentation for review and further advanced analysis by others
  • Present data for review and analysis by others, using tables, charts, graphs, utilising data software programmes
  • Collaborate with people both internally and externally at all levels to get the best value from data
Assessment

Apprentices will need to be working towards and achieve the following job role requirements before their End Point Assessment (EPA):

  • Working with data on a day to day basis
  • Collating and preparing data for analysis
  • Working with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Analyse numerical and text data to support business outcomes; gather data from multiple sources as directed and apply legal and ethical principles when manipulating data
Entry requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you will need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your Apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

If you are 19 or over, functional skills are not required unless requested by the apprentice’s employer.

Progression and careers

After completing this apprenticeship, you could move into a managerial position within your workplace. You could also progress on to the Level 4 Data Analyst and Level 6 Data Science Apprenticeship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already be working with data to start the apprenticeship?

Yes, you will need to be employed in a suitable role that gives you regular opportunities to work with data. This could include collecting, preparing, analysing or presenting data as part of your day-to-day work.

What software and data skills will I develop?

You will develop practical skills in sourcing, formatting, analysing and presenting data. This will include using tools such as spreadsheets, charts, graphs and other data software to communicate useful information to colleagues and stakeholders.

How does the apprenticeship work alongside my job?

You will learn while working in your existing role, applying the knowledge and skills from the apprenticeship directly in the workplace. Your employer and College will work together to make sure you have opportunities to develop the skills required for the apprenticeship.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the apprenticeship you will build your knowledge and demonstrate your skills through your workplace activities. At the end of the programme, you will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the Data Technician apprenticeship.

What can I progress to after completing the apprenticeship?

You could take on greater responsibility for data within your organisation or progress into more specialist roles. You could also continue your development through the Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship and, in the future, progress towards higher-level opportunities such as data science.
