Exeter College Tutor Awarded Technical Teaching Fellowship

Education and Training Foundation and Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 award Exeter College’s Stephen Mariadas a Technical Teaching Fellowship

Today at an event held at The Royal Society, Stephen Mariadas was awarded a Technical Teaching Fellowship from the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) in partnership with the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

Fellowships are awarded to outstanding practitioners who are recognised for their high impact teaching practice and the delivery of effective outcomes for learners.

Stephen Mariadas, Deputy Head of Maths & Science and Data Analytics at Exeter College, was one of three individuals awarded the fellowship. The three new Technical Teaching Fellows are all expected to share their learning and expertise across the sector as part of the award.

The ETF and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 launched the Technical Teaching Fellowship programme in June 2018 with the aim to celebrate, develop and disseminate exceptional practice in technical teaching. This is to support and empower the industrial and technical expertise of individuals, who support the progression of learners to higher levels of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) study and employment.

David Russell, Chief Executive Officer at the Education and Training Foundation, said:

“Everyone at the Education and Training Foundation would like to congratulate the expert teachers on being awarded their Fellowships.

“The Fellows will be a great benefit to the Further Education and Training Sector by being at the forefront of improving technical education in the sector. Through encouraging collaborations between industry and further education providers and assisting learner advancement, the Fellows will develop scope for further improvement in technical education and training.”

John Laramy, Exeter College Principal and Chief Executive said:

“I am delighted that Stephen’s talent as an exceptional teacher has been recognised by the award of a technical teaching fellowship. As a college, teaching and learning is at the heart of our success.

“We also aim to have a ‘line of sight’ to industry in all of our technical provision – so this technical teaching fellowship recognises both teaching and learning, and our passion for relevant, impactful and industry facing delivery. This award follows national recognition for our STEM provision, as the college was named STEM College of the Year by Enthuse.

“Many congratulations to Stephen and thank you to the ETF and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 for raising the profile of highly effective technical teaching and learning.”

Cerian Ayres, Head of Technical Education at the Education and Training Foundation, said:

“It is fantastic to see the work of three outstanding technical teachers being recognised. I am sure that through their Fellowships they will continue to share their knowledge, skills and experience with colleagues and consequently contribute to ensuring positive learner experiences and outcomes, supporting individuals to progress to higher levels of technical, STEM study and employment.’’

Nigel Williams, Secretary of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, said:

“The young scientists and engineers that form the future of Britain’s science and technology rely on the excellence of those who train them. We hope that, by helping to improve the quality of technical teaching at further education colleges, students will be inspired to pursue careers that enrich British industry”

The Technical Teaching Fellowship is a prestigious award only granted to applicants who have met the high standards required by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 selection panel.

As a new Technical Teaching Fellow, Mr Mariadas will:

  • receive an award of £5,000 – £15,000 to support knowledge transfer activity and to ensure remission time is guaranteed
  • develop “Pathways to Impact”- knowledge transfer activity action plans, to maximise the benefit of their Fellowships
  • attend two one-day developmental workshops over the academic year 2019/2020
  • be allocated a programme mentor to support them for the duration of the programme
  • be expected to disseminate their work at national conferences in January and July 2020
  • contribute to the delivery of a final report, written to engage and motivate technical education in their area of practice.

The Fellowships will commence in the 2019/20 academic year. The three awardees will also be made Fellows of the Society for Education and Training and will be awarded a year’s free membership during their participation in the programme.

Key City Players Join Forces For First Time To Create a Better Exeter

Exeter City Futures have reached a significant milestone on their journey to creating a more healthy, inclusive and sustainable City of Exeter as they announced that the Exeter College, the University of Exeter and Devon County Council have confirmed membership of its Community Interest Company (CIC) board alongside Exeter City Council and Global City Futures.

This is an incredibly important step forward for collaboration across Exeter and the wider region, as this is the first time key organisations in the City have joined forces and committed to working together as a collaborative city in tackling Exeter City Futures 12 transformational goals. The goals include: Reducing the Dominance of Cars, Half of all journeys walked or cycled, Reliable Journeys and Resilient Roads and Clean Air for Exeter.

“We are thrilled to have some of the biggest employers in Exeter join us on this journey and become a member of the Exeter City Futures CIC. We believe it is crucial that the heads of these key Exeter organisations come together in this formal way to demonstrate a city-wide commitment to creating a better Exeter.” – Liz O’Driscoll, Programme Director, Exeter City Futures.

“Although global in outlook, the University of Exeter is rooted in place. We are delighted to be part of Exeter City Futures and the opportunity that this provides for our community to work towards a shared vision of a vibrant and successful city.” – Chris Evans, Assistant Director (Regional Impact & Innovation), University of Exeter

“The work of ECF CIC has had a major impact on how we talk about the City Region and this has now been captured in the Exeter Industrial Strategy and the City 2040 Vision. ECF CIC has acted as a disrupter that has challenged how the City thinks and has driven a stronger, bolder vision. We are now preparing the ground for major policy shifts, a strong approach to innovation, and whole system change. ECF is an illustration of how a public private partnership can achieve success” – Karime Hassan, Chief Executive & Growth Director, Exeter City Council

“Exeter College fully supports the Exeter City Futures programme and commit to collaborating with partners across the city to realise the ambitions for an even greater Exeter. I look forward to working with the rest of the board and Exeter City Futures to develop collaborative solutions enabling inclusive growth and a thriving, healthy city for everyone” – Rob Bosworth, Vice Principal, Exeter College

“Devon County Council are delighted to be involved in this partnership, as it brings together organisations who can influence behaviour change on a city-wide level. We recognise that there are challenges ahead to support Exeter’s continued economic growth, while also promoting healthy, active lifestyles for its citizens. – Jamie Hulland, Transportation Strategy & Road Safety Manager, Devon County Council

‘Global City Futures are delighted to be working with so many local and like-minded businesses whose collective purpose in supporting social and environmental standards are palpable. As a team, we are excited to work towards a more healthy, inclusive and sustainable City of Exeter.’ Glenn Woodcock, Chief Executive, Global City Futures.

The new CIC board will be working closely with Exeter City Futures Programme Director, Liz O’Driscoll to create a plan to deliver ECF’s 12 Goals that takes into account the current projects happening around the City, and the barriers we need to overcome.

The challenges that the City of Exeter face will require a significant level of change in the way it operates, to promote sustainable growth and foster innovative solutions to the challenges Exeter faces as one of the fastest growing cities in the UK. It will require input from the whole city: Local authority, businesses, education institutions, community groups and individuals.

The newly expanded Exeter City Futures CIC Board will ensure that long-term capability is built within the City to ensure that it continues to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. The CIC Board will agree the programme delivery plan and strategic objectives, prepared by the Exeter City Futures Programme Lead and will agree metrics which will be used to judge the impact, progress and performance of Exeter City Futures going forward.

Exeter College is seeking the views of the community into a proposed masterplan which will invest £70 million into education – to meet the ambitions of the city of Exeter and the wider region.

The mission of the college is to shape the future of education by delivering excellence in all aspects of its work in order realise the ambitions of its learners, city and region.

Under the plans, the college is working to meet the ambitions of the city of Exeter, the region and the local community served by the college, together with meeting needs of world-class employers and the skills required within their workforce.

As highlighted by Exeter Live Better, Exeter is now one of the UK’s most successful cities as a brilliant alternative, on so many measures.

The masterplan – which would ultimately see the college’s Tower Block in Hele Road replaced by a lower building – has been drawn up as the outstanding college continues to play its role in building the city’s knowledge economy.

The college is holding an exhibition into the proposals and is inviting feedback from the public before taking the plans further.

The masterplan builds on the college’s considerable multi-million-pound investment in outstanding facilities across the city in recent years, including a new Advanced Engineering Centre, supported by the LEP, Maths and Science Centre, Sports Hall, and 3G pitch for community use. The college is currently investing in a new gym and dance studio.

The first stage of the masterplan is a proposal for a new South West Institute of Technology building, which will help put the region at the forefront of digital technology learning across the UK, next to the current Hele building.

John Laramy, Exeter College Principal and Chief Executive, said: “Exeter College is seeking the views of people in Exeter and beyond about our plans for the future – which could see, over time, around £70 million invested in education in the city.

“Exeter College has been based in and around Hele Road in the city centre since it was founded, as the first tertiary college in England, in 1970, when it had around 6,000 post-16 students.

“The college today caters for almost twice as many students as it did back then, and has developed a number of new facilities in the city centre and beyond.

“To meet the ambition of the vibrant city of Exeter, the region and the local community we serve, together with meeting needs of world class employers and the skills required within their workforce, we are looking at how we meet these demands.

“We value the important role we play in Exeter and Devon, and the sustained partnerships we have been fortunate to develop.

“Above all, we are proud to be part of the local community and that is why we are so keen to hear the views of our community and the city about our plans for the future.”

Steve Campion, Vice Principal (Finance and Business Operations), Exeter College, added: “Working with planning experts and some of the region’s leading architects we have drawn up a masterplan, showing how we could redevelop the Hele Road site in stages in the coming years.

“Before we submit this masterplan for planning consideration, we’d like to seek the views of the people of the city, and our neighbours in particular, hence our open invitation to our masterplan exhibition, which will feature details of our plans.”

The exhibition is being held in the college on Thursday 17th January 3.30pm to 7pm in the Tower Block. For those not able to attend, the proposals will also be available to view online, after the 17th January where there will also be an opportunity to provide feedback.

Exeter College Graduate on Track for a Bright Future

Katie Fowler, who graduated from Exeter College this year with a Business Management BA degree, has secured a place on a prestigious Graduate Scheme with international property company, JLL, with a fully funded Masters. It is a fantastic achievement for Katie, who aims to become a Chartered Surveyor after two years.

Katie, who previously studied at West Exe School, progressed directly from her studies at college onto an internship over the summer at the Exeter office of JLL. She impressed so much that she moved successfully onto their Graduate Scheme. Katie was first introduced to her employer during a talk given to the Business Management BA students by its Lead Director, Tim Western.

JLL is an international, property-based, professional services and investment management company, specialising in real estate. JLL have provided property consultancy advice to the college over the past 20 years.

Tim said of Katie:

“When I first met Katie at college it was obvious that she had a passion for property, she asked loads of questions and really had a feel for the local property market and business environment. Katie had a real aptitude and enthusiasm and so it was pretty obvious when she came to do an internship that she was going to be a great prospect moving forward. This is why we offered her a full-time position.”

After the two years Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) process, which Katie is undertaking alongside a Masters degree, and following the final assessment, she aims to become a fully fledged Chartered Surveyor with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), which will be a great milestone moment in her career.

Katie credits her experience of studying at Exeter College as setting her on her path to success in a field she thoroughly enjoys. She says “I really enjoyed studying A Levels at Exeter College and when I found out I could progress and study a degree level course, at a lower cost that at a university and stay in my home town it really appealed to me. Also, the fact that I could study two days a week meant I could still work and had the flexibilty to pursue other things, such as internships whilst studying.”

“Exeter College’s Centre for University Level Study was a really nurturing environment. I was in a class of 19 students, which meant that I was given a lot of bespoke advice and a lot of support and opportunities to talk directly to people such as Tim from JLL. It was Exeter College’s relationship with local employers that built the foundation for me to be able to work for JLL and be given this opportunity. Once I’m qualified the opportunities are endless, both in the UK and worldwide.”

Katie’s fellow graduates are all also doing really well following their degree, taking different paths for example, continuing to a top up year at universities and one is starting up their own digital marketing company. Their tutor Deborah Kearney (pictured left, with Katie and Tim) is very proud of her students and former students and says of Katie: “I am really pleased to see that Katie has been so inspired by her studies, discovering and then pursuing her passion. From listening to Tim from JLL in class, she instantly knew that the property and commercial world would very much suit her skills and I think her chosen career path is a match made in heaven.”

Exeter College’s Record Breaking Festival of Carols

Exeter College is celebrating a record breaking fundraising year – raising more than £1,400 for charity – at its annual Festival of Carols.

Each year the College raises money at the event for its charity of the year as chosen by the staff and students. This year the college raised a record breaking £1,453.50 in aid of Nightstop Devon. The service took place at a packed Exeter Cathedral on Wednesday 5th December.

Sarah Lakey, Senior Community & Events Fundraiser for Nightstop Devon said:

“Nightstop provides same day emergency overnight accommodation for young homeless people, between the ages of 16-25, in the homes of volunteer hosts who have been trained and vetted. “Young people are referred to Nightstop by agencies and are risk assessed before being placed with a suitable host. Nightstop then works with the young person and other agencies to find them longer term accommodation. “Exeter College are playing a vital role in supporting Nightstop throughout 2018/2019 student year. Money raised will go towards providing 50-70 bed nights a month across Devon.”

The event, sponsored by Lloyds Bank and Pollards Print, included music from the Exeter College Chamber Orchestra, Music Academy ensemble, Big Band and Performing Arts Choir and the audience were encouraged to join in the singing led by the College’s Choral Society.

Principal John Laramy said:

“For me, the Festival of Carols always marks the start of the festive season. It provides an opportunity for our Exeter College students and staff to showcase their immense talent and skill and, as a college, it provides a moment for us to give something back to our local community, who support and work with us throughout the year.”

The Festival began with a stunning candlelit procession, followed by a welcome from college Principal John Laramy and prayers and blessings by the Dean of the Cathedral and Rev’d Christopher Durrant. Guests were invited to sing along with the carols, listen to readings by students, and join in prayer.

Apprenticeship Conference Attracts 200 of the South West’s Leading Employers

More than 200 of the South West’s leading employers – as well as keynote speakers of national importance – have attended a flagship Apprenticeship conference, hosted by Exeter College at Sandy Park.

The landmark Bringing Clarity to the Future of Apprenticeships 2018 Conference provided the latest updates in employer, education and government thinking around Apprenticeships, to organisations from across the South West.

High profile national speakers at the conference included Christine Ourmières-Widener, CEO of Flybe, Rob Nitsch, Chief Operating Officer Institute for Apprenticeships, and David Hughes, CEO, Association of Colleges (AoC).

The conference also gave employers the opportunity to engage with experts in some of the technical aspects of Apprenticeship training in sessions led by City and Guilds, Exeter College and the University of Exeter. A session specifically designed for schools featured presentations by the Young Apprentice Ambassador Network and the Education and Training Foundation.

David Hughes said: “It was a pleasure to speak to employers in Exeter about the power and value of apprenticeships to their businesses and the excellent services that Exeter College provides. It was inspiring to hear from apprentices about how they are taking forward their careers and supporting other people to benefit from being an apprentice.”

With Apprenticeship numbers in decline nationally, Exeter College is bucking this national trend with a record year of growth in Apprenticeships.

Director of Apprenticeships at Exeter College, Mike Blakeley said: “Despite the challenges that are presenting themselves on the national agenda we recognise that the employers in the South West are hugely positive about Apprenticeship training. Through our work with them we see amazing and innovative employer programmes that really deserve to be celebrated on a national stage.

The conference gave employers based in the South West, those associated with the college, plus those who use other apprenticeship provision, the opportunity to hear national voices talk about the policies, challenges and opportunities that affect us all in the apprenticeship world. That is why we put so much time and effort in to hosting this event.”

The conference featured a strong apprentice voice throughout. Apprentices of all ages, in a variety of roles from digital, engineering and management were on hand to share experiences and showcase the fast moving and dynamic world that is Apprenticeships.

Exeter College Staff Get Cycling

Exeter College recently had a number of staff get involved with the Devon County Council initiative Cycle September.

The aim of the project is to encourage commuters to use other means to get to work, whether that is cycling, walking, getting the bus or car sharing. Over a hundred other organisations in Devon took part, clocking up a total of 180,396 miles – saving 45,584 lbs of CO2.

At Exeter College we cycled 3,738 miles and encouraged six new riders to make cycling a habit – placing the college 2nd in its category.

Jason Frost, who encouraged the college to take up the challenge, said:

“The Love to Ride Cycle September challenge is a great way of encouraging our colleagues to have a go at cycling, with a bit of friendly competition thrown into the mix. Whether you’ve never ridden a bike before or a seasoned cyclist it’s accessible to everyone.

The college encourages people to travel sustainably wherever possible, recently having invested in new facilities for staff choosing to travel actively, and cycling is a great way of doing this for those slightly longer journeys that aren’t possible on foot. Whether your ride is for commuting or leisure purposes the health benefits are great.”

We look forward to taking part in the challenge again in 2019.
