Exeter College Apprentice Ella Fielding has been named runner up of the coveted accolade of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ in a national award ceremony. Exceptional Apprentice Ella was shortlisted as a finalist and then announced as runner up for this year’s Apprentice of the Year in the prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Awards. The awards highlight exceptional students from across the country and celebrate the contributions they have made to their college and wider community.

Ella has recently completed a Higher Level Apprenticeship in Digital Marketing with Exeter College and plays an integral role within its dedicated apprenticeship team. She has been praised for her fantastic work ethic and driven attitude, and recognised for going above and beyond for the department on a number of occasions. Through effective marketing, such as managing the social media channels, local advertising campaigns and managing high profile events such as the Apprenticeship Expo, Ella has helped grow the apprenticeship intake from 550 to 1,000 a year.

Her passion for promoting apprenticeships has translated outside of her marketing role, acting as an ambassador during her free time and championing the programme at local schools and events. Since its inception in 2017, Ella has also been responsible for chairing the Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, a national government initiative in which young people use their own Apprenticeship experiences to inspire others.

It is not the first time that Ella has made headlines as an inspiration to others. She was a South West Finalist for the National Apprenticeship Awards 2018 and won the accolade of Young Employee of the Year at the Pride of Devon Awards in May 2018.

“I was overwhelmed to be named a finalist, let alone to have been named runner up. I am really please for Ellie Ferguson, from Aintree Hospital in Liverpool, who won this year’s Apprentice of the Year – a very worthy winner. I had such a great night at the ceremony, celebrating with some of my Exeter College team, and it was great to be recognised amongst so much talent!” explains Ella.

John Laramy, Principal and CEO of Exeter College said: “We are delighted that Ella has been named runner up for this prestigious national award, we are committed to apprenticeships both as an employer and as a provider, so this is a double celebration for our award winning apprenticeship team – well done Ella!”

David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “Once again we have had excellent applications from colleges across the country who are all rightly proud of the efforts, achievements and application of their students. It made the judging really tough, and offers inspiration to all of us. These awards show how much great work colleges are doing every day to help people realise their ambitions and develop their talents.”

The winners were announced at a glittering awards evening that marked the start of the AoC annual conference in Birmingham. The conference is an opportunity to showcase some of the ways that colleges are transforming the lives of more than two million people across England and how vital colleges are to the future of the British economy in the 21st century.

Exeter College is the Best FE College in the South West for exceptional employer satisfaction, according to official figures.

The college is positioned in the top spot regionally and second out of circa 200 FE colleges nationally, scoring 99% – very close to a near perfect 100% – for employer satisfaction.

This exceptional achievement is well above the national figure of 85.2% for employer satisfaction for FE colleges, according to figures released by the Department for Education (DfE) in its 2018 survey of employers.

The news comes amid record recruitment to Apprenticeships at Exeter College, with more than 1,000 starts in 2017/18.

This is against a backdrop of severe national decline, with the number of new Apprenticeships in the UK falling by approximately 30 per cent in the year to June 2018. Exeter College’s bucking of this national trend is supported by the exceptional customer service and support provided to employers by the Apprenticeships Team.

The Apprenticeships Team has also moved to a new Apprenticeships & Employment Hub in Queen Street, in the heart of Exeter city centre.

To further champion employer engagement, Exeter College is launching a ‘Positive about Apprenticeships’ charter mark at its Bringing Clarity to the Future of Apprenticeships conference today (Friday 30th November 2018), designed to recognise employers that go above and beyond in support of their apprentices and employees.

An ideal forum in which to celebrate the work of these selected local employers, the conference brings Apprenticeship experts from education, government, professional bodies and local employers to inform, inspire and clarify.

John Laramy, Exeter College Principal and Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that employers have rated their satisfaction with us, at 99% – a near perfect 100%. This places Exeter College as the highest performing college in the South West. I would like to congratulate the team who work so proactively with our employers and thank our employers for the way in which they work with the college.

“As a college we aim to be a partner, not simply a provider of Apprenticeships. It is clear from this feedback and the continuing growth of our Apprenticeship provision, this approach is working. We understand that our role is to make the whole process of employing an Apprentice as simple and impactful as possible.”

Mike Blakeley, Director of Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement, said: “The dedicated employer support team at Exeter College works exceptionally hard to meet the needs of businesses across the region.

“In a period of significant reform we’ve continued to ensure employers can access a pool of talented individuals to enhance their business and access outstanding training to support existing employees. With more than 100 staff dedicated to Apprenticeship provision, this accolade will be seen as a just reward for their exceptional endeavours.”

The achievement caps off an outstanding year for Apprenticeships at Exeter College. Significant highlights include securing the largest single employer contract won by the college with the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, and the celebration of the first year of an outstanding partnership with GWR, recent finalists for a national award for Apprenticeship Employer of the Year.

Ella Fielding, an Apprentice who has worked within the Apprenticeships Team at the college, has been recognised individually for her outstanding performance and contribution to the college and community in the Devon Pride Awards, National Apprenticeship Awards 2018 and most recently the Association of Colleges Awards.

The college has also expanded its apprenticeship offering, with more than 90 different Apprenticeship programmes now available, giving more choice for individuals looking for support in their chosen career pathway.

It will help align our teams with a unified approach for digital transformation, highlight our commitment to exceptional teaching and learning and ultimately give our students the best opportunity to develop skills that they can take with them as they progress their lives beyond Exeter College.”

John Laramy, Principal and Chief Executive said: “As a college we need to proactively prepare for industry 4.0, digital transformation is therefore becoming essential, not optional. Working with sector leading partners such as Microsoft is essential in delivering the best outcomes for our learners.”

Anthony Salcito, Vice-President of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, said: “Microsoft Showcase Schools and Colleges are shining examples of those applying purpose-driven innovation in a variety of ways to build connection, motivate students and to create community in and out of school.

A talented Exeter College Apprentice from Tiverton has won a prestigious regional Apprentice award at this year’s EEF Future Manufacturing Awards.

Tobias Cowan, aged 21, who works for HepcoMotion, came up trumps by taking gold in the Engineering Manufacturing Apprentice Award.

The award recognises the outstanding contribution being made by manufacturing apprentices across the region. The award is highly-respected and hotly contested with winners selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics.

Tobias beat off competition from across the region and won the title after impressing judges with his commitment, ambition and drive to pursue a career in manufacturing. Tobias’ passion, hard work and attention to detail, along with his ambitions for a teaching role within the sector were the deciding factors for the judging panel.

Judges said they had been overwhelmed by the high calibre of apprentices nominated this year, making Tobias’s win even more of an achievement.

Tobias is now in the running for the national title where he will go head-to-head with regional winners from across the UK at the national awards gala in London in January next year.

Tobias Cowan, Apprentice at HepcoMotion, says: “I am delighted to have won this award and to have been crowned regional winner. It’s an amazing feeling to be recognised for doing something I genuinely enjoy and is setting me up for my future. I’m only at the very start of my career, so to receive gold at these awards and be singled out in this way is a real boost and will motivate me even more.

“My apprenticeship is challenging and rewarding and I hope my success encourages others to think hard about taking up an apprenticeship in manufacturing too. Now I can’t wait to get to the national finals to meet the other regional winners and see how I compare.”

Jim Davison, Membership Director for the South at EEF says: “Tobias undoubtedly deserves this award. He won the judges over with his hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. It’s right that he should be congratulated for doing so well, especially when up against other candidates of such high quality.

“Manufacturing is essential to British economic success and apprentices have a vital role to play in securing the future of our sector. It’s great to see Tobias’ efforts being recognised and I wish him the best of luck at the national finals, he’s a fantastic role model.”

The main thrust of the ‘love our colleges’ campaign is to highlight the funding challenges for all post 16 provision, that is now impacting on colleges and school sixth forms.

We are the only OECD country that funds its post 16 provision at a lower rate than its pre 16 provision. In short, GCSE Geography is part of a larger funding package in a school environment pre 16, than studying advanced level subjects or technical subjects in a college or school sixth form, post 16.

In addition, the Institution for Fiscal Studies says that post 16 education has been the phase of education that has been hardest hit by the period of austerity.

Today, funding for students drops by 24% at the age of 16, this gap applies equally to school sixth forms and colleges.

John Laramy, Exeter College Principal and Chief Executive, said:

“At Exeter College, we have been able to buck many of the National trends and despite having to deal with a funding reduction each year, since 2008, our students and apprentices have excelled.

However, for us, our aim is to level the playing field with private education so that our students have a broad curriculum and can access a wide range of support services and extra-curricular activities – it is these services that are now starting to be impacted by the ongoing and illogical funding reductions.

As a country we have a productivity problem, we are also the only OECD country that invests less in technical post 16 education than our international competitors – for me the equation is simple:

Invest the same in post 16 education as all other developed nations + great colleges + a broad curriculum = Increased productivity.

I really hope you will feel able to support the ‘love our colleges’ campaign.”
