Overview

This course is for you if you are interested in, good at and perhaps considering a career in art and design. This course will help you to develop your art and design skills, as well as building your study skills in preparation for progression to Level 3.

You will be required to meet deadlines, work independently and have enthusiasm for the arts. Your course work will be assessed regularly. There are no exams for this course.

What topics will I study?

Most of the work is practical. You will have the opportunity to work in a range of different media and processes for example, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and graphics. The intention is to enable you to develop your knowledge and skills while producing a very personal portfolio of work.

You will:

  • Spend your time working on a variety of practical projects investigating a wide range of materials and techniques in both 2D and 3D disciplines
  • Study the work of other artists and designers, supported by written and practical work
  • Enhance your research skills through trips to galleries, museums, and specialist workshops
  • Develop a personal portfolio, culminating in exhibiting your work at the Summer Show

Next steps: 
When you complete this course, you could progress to a Level 3 course or an Apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

You will need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 3 or above (including English Language and Maths). If you don’t have a grade 4 in English and Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course. You will need to have GCSE Art and Design at grade 3 or above. You should have an interest in, and be committed to, studying art and design. You will have to present a portfolio at your interview.

Facilities

The Art and Design Faculty has numerous art studios, a print workshop, a ceramics workshop, a 3D workshop, photographic darkrooms, fashion and textile workspace, IT rooms with industry standard software eg: Photoshop, Flash, Motion, Stop Motion Pro and Final Cut Pro software on PCs and Macs.

Additional Costs

The college will provide some materials and equipment. There is a material and equipment fee of £60 payable at enrolment at the beginning of the course. Other additional material costs may be approximately £20 per term. Day trips to galleries and other places of interest usually cost between £25-30.
