Overview

This course is part of the Modular Acceleration Programme (MAP) that enables learners to study modules from a Higher Technical Qualification. More information on the MAP programme can be found here.

The intentions of this module are to provide students with an understanding of the principles underpinning sports coaching and teaching delivery and to allow opportunities to develop your coaching expertise through practical hands-on experience.

Using critical reflection you will enhance your understanding of your own coaching philosophy. Students will study the concepts of coaching, teaching and instruction and consider the relevance of particular styles to a variety of situations.

You will plan, perform, and evaluate your delivery across a wide range of styles and in a number of different sports with the aim of developing your coaching skills and widening your experience to become more confident in employment settings in the future.

Delivery will be face-to-face and consist of a mixture of lectures, practical coaching and teaching sessions, coaching observation, and analysis, along with group work to support reflection and analytical skills.

The module will comprise two 20 credit units from our FdSc Coaching and Fitness which is validated by the University of Exeter.

The component modules are:

  • EXE1014 Principles of Coaching, Teaching and Instruction
  • EXE1011 Coaching and Teaching Practice

The course will be delivered in 3 hours per week of timetabled sessions over 30 weeks.

There will be 4 assessments in total. An essay of 2,500 words and a personal development plan in semester 1 and a personal reflection of 2,500 words and a practical examination in semester 2. The assessments will be those used for full time learners studying the corresponding module. Each assessment will carry equal weighting.

If learners fail any assessment, they will have the opportunity to resit over the summer referral period which finishes mid-August 2025.

*Free tuition fees, with nothing for the student to pay. However, the funding accessed for MAP will reduce the amount remaining in a future Lifelong Learning Entitlement account
