Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship

A Metal Fabricator Apprentice will be manufacturing anything that can be fabricated out of metal, such as bridges, oil rigs and ships.

Overview

This Apprenticeship is aimed at Engineers looking to progress from their Level 2 Engineering Operative to develop a higher level of knowledge, skills and professional behaviours within a fabrication environment.

  • Communications for engineering technicians
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Further Engineering Mathematics
  • Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
  • Mechanical principles of an engineering system
  • Electro pneumatic and hydraulic systems and devices
  • Computer-aided drafting in engineering
  • Monitoring and fault diagnosis of engineering systems
  • Features and applications of electrical machines
  • Principles and operation of three phase systems
  • Electrical and electrical principles in engineering

Apprentices will need to be working towards and achieve the following job role requirements before their end point assessment:

The broad purpose of the occupation is to carry out metal fabrication work using things such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plate and metal sheet etc.

Work includes manufacturing or repair of bridges, oil rigs, ships and submarines, petro-chemical installations, cranes, platforms, aircraft, automotive and machinery parts, sheet metal enclosures, equipment supports, and anything that can be fabricated out of metal. Fabricators can work alone or in teams, in factories or on operational sites.

Next steps: On completion you could progress on to the Level 4 Engineering Manufacture Technician or into full time employment.

Entry Requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. You will need to have achieved the Engineering Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship and as a guide, you ideally need GCSE grade 4 in English Language and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your Apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

You will have access to all the College facilities, including a student restaurant, full media suite, gym and a fully equipped Learning Resource Centre (LRC).
