What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

The Intermediate Apprenticeship offers a practical approach and a solid platform for anyone wishing to develop a career in bricklaying and masonry. This Apprenticeship is for anyone working within the industry. As an Apprentice you will hold a full-time job and attend college on both a day release and block release basis throughout the programme.

What topics will I study?

  • General workplace safety
  • Moving, handling and storing resources
  • Setting up and erecting masonry structures
  • Laying domestic drainage
  • Erecting thin joint masonry structures
  • Laying and finishing non-specialist concrete
  • Repairing and maintaining masonry structures
  • Information, quantities and communication
  • Building methods and construction technologies
  • Interpreting working drawings and setting out masonry structures

You will gain a range of practical skills and knowledge such as cavity walling and setting and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level.
Progression to subjects such as interpreting drawings to set out masonry structures, thin joint masonry, masonry cladding and building solid walling will follow. You will demonstrate safe working practices and will gain an in-depth understanding of health and safety, construction technology and building methods.

This will provide evidence towards a framework of qualifications which make up the apprenticeship including the Level 2 Diploma and NVQ Diploma. It will also show your competence, knowledge, understanding of business tasks and procedures and prove you are able to carry out your job to the required standard.

What are the entry requirements?

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide you ideally need GCSE grade 3 or above in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support in order to help you achieve the functional skills element or GCSE requirements of the Apprenticeship. Support can be delivered either prior to your Apprenticeship via a traineeship or during the delivery of your programme. An interest in the industry is essential.

What can the course lead on to?

Apprentices will be working towards achievement of the following:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths (where applicable)

We would highly recommend that you progress onto the NVQ level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship on completion of this course. You will be qualified to a basic level in brick and structural work so further career opportunities and training should be widely available to you.

Are there any additional costs?

At the start of your course you may need to buy some one off basic equipment, tools and textbooks.

What support can I get?

You will have a dedicated Skills Officer who you can contact at any time. They will visit you in the workplace every 10 weeks to carry out a progress review with you and your employer.
