What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

A Bricklaying Apprentice will be laying bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. You may also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

What topics will I study?

Topics include:

  • Learning how to determine quality and quantities of building material, including mix ratios of mortar and concrete
  • How to set out and build brickwork, including simple arches and surrounding brickwork
  • Learning how to communicate in a clear, articulate and appropriate manner with clients and team members, ensuring clarity
  • Understanding that buildings from different eras will have different construction methods, which must be taken into account
  • Understanding any Health and Safety hazards, current regulations and legislation
  • Understanding the importance and considerations of thermal qualities, airtightness and ventilation to buildings

What are the entry requirements?

Maths and English GCSE, grade C/4 (or equivalent). If you do not have these qualifications our team will support you to gain these skills alongside your apprenticeship.

What facilities are there?

  • Our dedicated Construction Training Centre has undergone a £1 million refurbishment and offers industry standard facilities for all elements of construction training.
  • This facility includes; a brickaying workshop, cafe, social space and ICT suite.

What can the course lead on to?

Some apprentices go into employment OR progress onto a Level 3 Bricklaying Apprenticeship

Are there any additional costs?

What support can I get?

You will have a dedicated Skills Officer who you can contact at any time. They will visit you in the workplace every 10 weeks to carry out a progress review with you and your employer.
