STEM Diploma – Extend Option

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

Why do this course?

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields offer a huge range of varied, stimulating and interesting career paths. STEM skills are in very high demand and crucial for growth of the UK economy.

In the STEM Diploma you will enhance your skills, knowledge and CV through a series of workshops, lessons and volunteering opportunities. This will also give you the chance to see how the theories learnt in the classroom are used in practice.

What will it involve?

You can choose from a wide range of online courses provided by top universities. Examples include; Cancer In The 21st Century: The Genomic Revolution, In the Night Sky: Orion, Why Do We Age? The Molecular Mechanisms of Ageing, Predictive Analytics: Gaining Insights from Big Data, or Cryptarithms, Symbologies and Secret Codes.

As well as choosing your favourite topics to study in greater depth, you will also discuss the issues raised with like-minded students. You will also share your passion for STEM subjects by volunteering at College Open Events, science festivals and careers fairs, through to work experience or visits to local STEM employers. You could also work on cutting-edge projects such as Exeter City Futures.

How might it help in the future?

The STEM Diploma will take your learning beyond the classroom, enabling you to fill your CV or Personal Statement with relevant experiences and skills. It will also increase your confidence at interviews, boosting your prospects as you start your career in a field which has high earnings potential and huge demand for those with the right skills.
