Microbiology – Extend Option

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

To study this Extend option you should also be taking AS Levels including Biology.

Why do this course?

This Extend course offers the opportunity to combine a theoretical understanding in this vital field, as well as develop new practical techniques in microbiology. It will be interesting in itself as well as potentially giving you a unique advantage to support your future in this area of biological research.

What will it involve?

The aim of this extend is to give you practical experience with microbiology as well as an insight into related careers such as medical research, forensic science, public health or environmental organisations and a wide range of industries.

A variety of techniques will be covered to grow a culture of bacteria and identify them.

Theoretically it will aim to show links between with food science, microbes as a source of useful enzymes and chemicals such as antibiotics.

There is growing awareness of the impact of microbes in the environment, in carbon capture and storage, bioremediation and breaking down pollutants. Finally, eDNA is an emerging field and with a digital lab we will show how sequences can be analysed and identified.

You will have the opportunity to research and present on an area of microbiology, developing valuable skills required for university and beyond.

How might it help in the future?

This course will give you access to new practical techniques, the latest research and the theoretical underpinning of this field. It would support your application to study biology further including degrees in microbiology, or to enhance your skills to move into employment in the field. You will also develop skills in presentation, discussion, and research.
