Overview

If you are new to clay modelling, then a portrait head might be a good place to start. The more experienced might prefer to work on the whole figure. Whatever you produce can be fired in a kiln and taken away at the end of the course.

You will receive a lot of individual tuition. There is no formal assessment, but you will have continuous feedback and advice about your progress.

Your tutor will give you guidance in the basic techniques required and the following areas in particular will be covered: basic properties of clay, modelling techniques including use of various tools, preparation of clay for kiln, how to make observations of figure for modelling, basic measurements, guidance to the main features of the head, armatures. It may be possible for other techniques to be covered on an individual basis according to your requirements.
