Independence Gateway

This course will help you to become more independent through developing your personal, social and life skills. This course is ideal if you want the opportunity to try out new activities which will help you build your skills in small, supportive groups. Through classroom, community and work-based activities the Independence Gateway gives you the opportunity to develop both life and work skills.

Overview

You will:

  • Have your own personal tutor and individual targets to work towards
  • Improve your life skills in college, the workplace and within the community
  • Participate in work experience placements
  • Develop your English and Maths skills
    Have the opportunity to take part in the Ten Tors, Jubilee Challenge and work on community projects involving the National Trust

Assessment is continuous with regular reviews built into your programme.

What can I study alongside this course?
The course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Next steps:
After the course you could move on within Exeter College to the Skills or Progression Gateway, a Level 1 programme or join the Supported Internship Programme. There may also be opportunities within the community or on a work training programme.

Entry Requirements

This programme is designed for students with additional learning needs who have attended specialist or mainstream schools. There will be an initial interview with a member of staff and a phased induction process.

Facilities

We have specialist teaching classrooms, life skills training flat, kitchens (which have been designed to promote independence). We also make full use of the local community as a learning environment. You have full access to a learning resource centre and there is a refectory in the Hele Building allowing us tomake full use of the college’s resources and provision.
