Independence Gateway

This course will help you to become more independent through developing your personal, social and life skills.

Overview

This course takes place at the Hub for Independent Living and Learning, off Queen Street (behind the Sports Hall).

This course is ideal if you want the opportunity to try out new activities which will help you build your skills in small, supportive groups. Through classroom, community and work-based activities the Independence Gateway gives you the opportunity to develop both life and work skills.

On this course you will:

  • Have your own personal tutor and weekly personal development sessions, and with the support of your tutor you will work towards bespoke personal and social targets
  • Improve your life skills in College, the workplace and within the community
  • Participate in employer encounters
  • Develop your English and Maths skills at a level that’s suitable to you
  • Have the opportunity to take part in wider community projects

What can I study alongside this course?
The course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

Next steps: After the course you could move on within Exeter College to the Progression Gateway, a Level 1 programme or join the Supported Internship Programme. There may also be opportunities within the community or on a work training programme.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. This programme is designed for students with additional learning needs who have attended specialist or mainstream schools. There will be an initial interview with a member of staff and a phased induction process.

Facilities

Independence Gateway is based in our Hub for Independent Living and Learning (HILL) building with a purpose-built kitchen and classroom space. We will be able to ensure all aspects of our independent living curriculum are delivered in a safe and accessible location. The new site enables us to be closer to the wider resources and opportunities available at Exeter College and will give the students a whole new range of exciting opportunities. We also make full use of the local community as a learning environment. You have full access to a learning resource centre and there is a refectory on site allowing you to make full use of the College’s resources and provision.

Additional Costs

A £55 resource fee applies.

The resource fee covers trips and visits, external speakers course material and any additional activities.
