Medical Technologies – Extend Option
Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.
Why do this course?
Cutting edge technology is ever more important in the medical sciences and practice. Doctors and researchers routinely use diagnostic and therapy techniques such as MRI, CT scans, and radionuclides. This course will allow you to develop a basic understanding of all these technologies and their underlying scientific principles. This course is suitable for anyone considering a future in a field of medical science and who enjoys the applications of science. The course complements the traditional subjects studied by future medical students and gives you a broader knowledge of the science involved in the medical sciences.
What will it involve?
You will explore the scientific principles behind current medical technology through the use of case studies and problem-based learning. You will learn about ECG; ultrasound; fibre optics including endoscopes; MRI; X-ray imaging; CT scanning; radionuclide imaging and therapy; and the defects and correction of vision and hearing. You will learn to research and present topics and produce a scientific poster.
How might it help in the future?
Doing this course will give you an overview of technology that has become essential in medical practice and research. It will strengthen your application to medical courses, including medicine, veterinary sciences, biomedical sciences and nursing. It should give you an advantage in the selection process for the most competitive courses (such as BMAT/UKCAT exam) as well as your interview. In the future it will help you explain the basics to your patients.

What our students think?
“Physics is my favourite subject and I particularly enjoy atomic physics. There is a helpful link between Physics and Maths, which is very interesting and lots of cross over, for example, when studying kinematics.” Read more >
“I study PE, Biology and Psychology A Levels and find they link together nicely. I chose my subjects by thinking about what I enjoy the most and what could help lead to a career in Sports, as that is my main interest.” Read more >
“Maths can help you build your confidence to try more things, as it’s really rewarding when you get the right answers and figure things out by yourself.” Read more >
