This challenging, academic and industry-focused course is ideal if you have a passion for engineering and will provide you with the qualification required to apply for university or an Apprenticeship.
In Year 1 of this course you will:
- Develop your specialist skills, knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, problems and solutions
- Study the core progression units in Engineering Principles, Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team, and Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
- Learn about applied commercial and quality principles, electronic devices and circuits, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and develop your Further Maths skills
- Carry out controlled practical work in our fully equipped facilities
- Develop skills valued by employers
- Benefit from work experience as part of your programme of study
Assessment is by internally or externally set assessments and examinations, graded Pass, Merit or Distinction
Future Steps: After successful completion of Year 1 you can apply to progress onto the BTEC second year programme (BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering) and have a choice of pathway in either Engineering or Aeronautical Maintenance. You may also choose to apply for an Engineering Apprenticeship.
In Year 2 of this course you will specialise in an Engineering or Aeronautical pathway. Assessment on both pathways is by internally or externally set assessments and examinations, graded Pass, Merit or Distinction
On the Engineering pathway you will:
- Further develop your skills by studying Micro Controllers, Welding Technologies, Industrial Robotics, Analogue Electrical Circuits, Mechanical Systems, a special engineering project and Calculus to solve engineering problems
- Carry out controlled practical work in our fully equipped facilities
- Develop skills valued by employers
- Benefit from work experience as part of your programme of study
This pathway is perfect for students with a progression plan to specialise in the engineering sector.
Future Steps: After successful completion of Year 2 you can apply for an Engineering Apprenticeship. Or you could progress to university or study at Exeter College to gain an HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Future job roles might include electrical or mechanical engineering technician, manufacturing specialist or design engineer.
On the Aeronautical pathway you will:
- Study this year at our Future Skills Centre (near Exeter Airport)
- Experience practical skills in aviation, such as working in the hangar and working on a Jetstream aircraft
- Complete aviation specific units such as Theories of Flight and First Line Maintenance
- Additional units include Micro Controllers, Calculus and an engineering project
- Attain the skills and knowledge to prepare you for a career that has great potential to earn a very competitive salary
- Benefit from work experience as part of your course
This pathway is perfect for students with a passion for aeronautical engineering and who are looking to progress on to an aeronautical apprenticeship.
Future Steps: Progression is on to the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Aeronautical Engineering which incorporates the CAA B license or on to an Apprenticeship in Aeronautical Maintenance. Future job roles might include aeronautical technician, B licence engineer or general engineering. Alternatively, you may choose to progress on to university.
- Entry Requirements

You will need six GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science (or Double Science or Physics).
Progression to Year 2 of this course on the Engineering or Aeronautical pathway is reliant on successful completion of the 1st year BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Engineering qualification with all units successfully achieved. This course is for students with a passion to go into the engineering sector and further enhance their skills.
- Facilities

The Technology Centre combines the training and teaching of aerospace, engineering and automotive students with access to state of the art equipment within world class facilities. There are two CAD/CAM Suites which include 20 computers running the latest versions of AutoCAD, Inventor, Solid Works and EdgeCAM. The software will allow engineering students to experience ‘industry standard’ software and CNC machining equipment that give an understanding of CAD for manufacture. The faculty also has two purpose built machine workshops, with a combined total of 14 industrial lathes and 10 industrial milling machines.
Our Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) give you access to a huge range of online books and resources to help you with your studies.
