What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

The Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair offers a practical approach and a solid platform for anyone wishing to develop a career as a motor vehicle technician. As an Apprentice you will hold a full time job and attend college one day per week throughout the 24 month programme. You will work towards a framework of qualifications which make up the Apprenticeship. This course will launch you directly into the workplace and provides an excellent way to build your career and progress to further training and education. NVQ: Part of the Apprenticeship framework is the NVQ qualification. The NVQ shows your competence, knowledge, and understanding of business tasks and procedures; and proves you are able to carry out your job to the NVQ standards.

When on your college day-release, you will be taught by your Tutor or Training Officer. You will spend the remainder of the week in the workplace where you will put your new skills into practice. Whilst at work, your Training Officer will visit you and carry out assessments in a variety of styles: observing you carrying out practical tasks; completing knowledge questions. They will also help you build your portfolio of evidence for your NVQ.

What topics will I study?

You will cover the following units:

  • Contribute to good housekeeping
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health and Safety
  • Maintain positive working relationships
  • Carry out routine vehicle servicing
  • Remove and refit engine, electrical, and chassis components

You will also be able to choose a number of optional units. During your course you will also complete a Technical Certificate and Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) assignment. Technical Certificate: This is the theory and underpinning knowledge you require within your job.

What experiences will I get?

You will benefit from our working relationships with companies including Greenslades Garage, Central Garage and Denbury Diesels.

What are the entry requirements?

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide you ideally need GCSE grade 3 or above in English and maths and in some cases ICT. However, we will work with you and provide additional support in order to help you achieve the functional skills element or GCSE requirements of the Apprenticeship. Support can be delivered either prior to your Apprenticeship via a traineeship or during the delivery of your programme.

You must have an interest and desire to learn and understand electrical systems and be prepared to participate in all college sessions. You will need to complete the Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship before progressing to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

What facilities are there?

  • A large modern fully equipped workshop
  • A state of the art automotive diagnostic laboratory with test simulators and rigs
  • A dedicated IT laboratory with internet access
  • Four specific automotive training classrooms
  • Meeting and function rooms
  • Attached restaurant
