This AAT qualification is a competence-based qualification that gives you the relevant and practical skills to do a wide range of accounting and finance jobs.

In this qualification you will master more complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.

This qualification is currently equivalent to 160 UCAS points and may support your application to university.

What topics will I study?

The AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting consists of six mandatory units:

  • Advanced bookkeeping
  • Final accounts preparation
  • Management accounting: Costing
  • Indirect tax
  • Ethics for accountants
  • Spreadsheets for accounting

You will be assessed through time-constrained competence-based projects and external online examinations throughout the programme, including a synoptic assessment (final examination covering all units).

Teaching and learning methods:

Workroom based teaching and practice exercises to develop accounting skills, IT skills and exam preparation in computer suites. Sessions are delivered by highly qualified industry accountants.

Guest lecturers and workshops from professionals working with accountancy practice and a range of finance departments. Advice and guidance sessions and careers workshops.

Entry Requirements

It is expected that you will already hold the AAT Level 2 Accounting Certificate. However, it is possible someone may be eligible to begin at AAT Level 3 depending upon accounting qualifications already held and work experience (however another equivalent level 2 accounting qualification in accounting would be needed.)

You have to complete a Excel spreadsheet online course during the first weeks of the course to show your suitability to the full level 3 specification.


You will study at Bradninch Court, one of our Professional and Adult learning centres and have access to the college’s Learning Resource Centres.

Kitchen facilities are available for learner use including fridge, kettle, microwave, tea/coffee etc.

Cycling friendly facilities (shower/changing area, bike locking stands outside).

Additional Costs

AAT membership for 12 months costs approximately £140. You will also need course books (approx costs £50-£130 depending if short or long course).
