What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

In this qualification you will master more complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.

This course is aimed at learners with experience and knowledge of double entry bookkeeping and builds on the skills developed at Level 2.

Learners are required to successfully complete 5 units in total, assessed through an end of unit exam. A pass is between 70-79%, Merit 80-89% and Distinction 90-100%. You will have four exams for the normal units and one Synoptic Assessment that will take place at the end of the course to assess your knowledge and understanding from the whole of the year.

What are the entry requirements?

The AAT does not set any prerequisites for the study of the AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping. However, for the best chance of success, we require students to begin their AAT Level 3 studies with a Level 2 bookkeeping or accounting qualification.

Learners also need to have maths and English GCSE at grade C/4 or equivalent.

What facilities are there?

You will study at Bradninch Court, one of our Professional and Adult learning centres and have access to the college's Learning Resource Centres.

What can the course lead on to?

The aim of this course is to provide students with the specialist knowledge and skills required for a clear progression to a choice of careers in Finance.  It will also lead to further studies in bookkeeping and the full AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting.

AAT Qualified Bookkeeper Status

You can achieve AAT Bookkeeper status (AATQB) through this course. When you successfully complete the Advanced Certificate in Accounting (Level 3) you can apply for AAT associate bookkeeping membership and achieve professional AATQB status.

AATQB status (AAT associate bookkeeping membership) is a new professional designation for employees in bookkeeping roles. It indicates the highest standards of professional conduct, up to date technical knowledge and commitment to ongoing learning. It's becoming increasingly important for businesses to employ staff with professional status. AAT is a full member of IFAC, the global organisation for the accountancy profession.

AAT membership for 12 months costs approximately £140.
