“Participating in the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) Level 5 Diploma Course in Leadership and Management as an Apprentice was transformative for me because I developed a positive and inclusive mindset along with a strong commitment to professional and personal development for myself and my team; the skills and knowledge I learned (and continue to learn) through CMI have had a tremendous impact on the work my team and I do; I am more confident, self-aware, and conscious of others’ situations and perspectives; and I am much better at making informed decisions, planning, delivering, monitoring, and reporting on work than I was when I was an “accidental manager.”
The graduation ceremony in the beautiful setting of Exeter Cathedral at the end of the course was a stand out moment for me. This was a great way to celebrate the success of completing the course and recognise the hard work everyone present had put into learning.
It feels wonderful to have been honoured with the prestigious CMI ‘Outstanding Student of the Year’ award recognising the effort I made in learning and applying what I learned in my day to day work. I would like to thank my tutors for nominating me for the award. Being nominated in the first place was surprising and exciting. I feel motivated to continue working in such a way that others think so highly of.”
Ellie was named Outstanding Student of the Year after completing a combined CMI Diploma in Leadership and Management and Operations/Department Manager Apprenticeship (Level 5) at Exeter College.
“One thing that the College does really well is to provide a distinct adult/higher education space so that you feel like you are a full university level learner and not just coming to College. As a mature learner, this was particularly important for me. During my time at the College, we had several interesting guest speakers who were all relevant to our course and helped to link what we were learning to real, ambitious industry settings. As well as the academic knowledge that my studies have provided, I have also developed readily transferable skills that I can take into the workplace, such as data analysis and the ability to present to a large group, as well as soft skills such as team working, delegation and effective communication. College has broadened my horizons as to what I can achieve within my career.
I progressed onto the Business BA course having initially completed a Level 3 Business Admin Apprenticeship at the College, followed by a Business HNC and HND. I had really enjoyed these previous courses and the College by now felt like a second home, so I had no doubts about wanting to continue onto a third year of HE study. My previous experience of the College’s teaching, facilities and overall culture gave me full confidence.
I was lucky during my time as a student to have excellent tutors, both with industry knowledge but also a firm grounding in education. This mixture gave them a level of authority to go with their natural passion for the subject. My main tutors were supported by a team of helpful and knowledgeable lecturers who were all specialists in their individual areas. Then there is the College’s excellent support staff, varying from mental health and wellbeing services to financial advice and travel support. The other aspect worth mentioning is the superb range of study resources available at the College. In addition to the wide range of physical books and higher education-only spaces in the College’s Learning Resource Centres, there is also a vast range of material available through various online source.
I would definitely recommend Exeter College to any prospective students, irrespective of what course they may be interested in. There is an incredible range of study routes and options to choose from, surrounded by state of the art facilities, all within a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment designed to get the best out of you as a student.”
“When I came to College the course replicated the life of a professional rugby player. This kickstarted my physical progression and really helped with my rugby journey. I do my degree part time on Mondays and Thursdays, and train around those times, then I coach in the mornings usually. My days fit in quite nicely around each other!”

“The best thing about an Apprenticeship is taking the theory you are learning in the classroom and being able to apply it immediately to a real-world problem. When you can see that what you are learning has an impact on (for example) the time a task was taking, or the accuracy of what you are doing, it is incredibly rewarding.
The RD&E Foundation Trust recognised the value in having someone with this skillset and I was very excited to learn, as data analytics is becoming more and more essential in a data-driven world.”
