First week at college FAQs
The following page is intended for students who will be starting their course at Exeter College in September 2021.
When is my first day at college?
If you’re new to college, or starting a new course, your first day of college is on Wednesday 8 September.
If you’re returning to the second year of your course at college, your induction day will take place on Thursday 9 September.
Where do I need to go on my first day?
Your tutor will tell you at your enrolment appointment when and where you need to go on your first day. They will make a note of the details in your ‘Getting Started’ booklet.
How will I know where to go?
When you arrive there will be plenty of college staff to meet you and help you find your way around – just look for the people in blue.
What will I do on my first day?
Your first day at college is your induction day and will be spent with your tutor group.
Our tutors are aware that lots of students are nervous about their first day and week of college, and about making new friends, and will support you through this time. They will plan lots of activities to help you get to know one another, find your way around college, and feel welcomed and confident as quickly as possible.
If you’re nervous keep in mind that everyone is in the same situation and will be as nervous and eager to make friends as you are!
When will I receive my timetable?
You will receive your timetable during your induction day with your tutor group. This will be on your first day at college.
The structure of your timetable will depend on the type of programme you are studying at college e.g. an A Level or IB programme, a full time vocational course, or an apprenticeship.
Either way, your timetable will be quite different from what you are used to at school.
When will teaching begin?
Teaching for all students will begin on Friday 10 September.
Do I need to come in to college on 9 September?
9 September is an induction day for students returning to the second year of their course.
If you are new to Exeter College this year, or you are starting a new course with us, you will not need to attend college on 9 September, but your tutor will set you with some independent study tasks linked to online learning for you to access from home before your on-site teaching begins on 10 September.
When and where is the Freshers’ Fair being held?
This year’s Freshers’ Fair will take place on Wednesday 8 September. This is our annual event for all new students to Exeter College (aged 16-19). The event will take place in our Sports Hall from 9am – 4pm. Your tutor will let you know what time your group will be attending the fair.
This year’s Re-Freshers’ Fair will take place on Thursday 9 September. This event is for our 2nd year returning students. The event will also take place in our Sports Hall from 10.45am – 4.15pm.
We are planning for these events to take place at full capacity, however we will be guided by National and College guidance at the time.
The Sports Hall is located at Victoria Yard, off Queen Street, Exeter, Devon, EX4 3SR.
I have more questions / I’m not sure where to go on my first day…
If you have any questions or are not sure where to go during your first day you can visit one of the Helpzones, which will be located at Tower Building, Victoria House and CCI building for the city centre sites.
If you are studying at the Construction, Technology or Future Skills Centres, please head to the reception in your building if you have any questions.
