Sport Therapy and Physical Rehabilitation – Extend Option
Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.
Why do this course?
Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy have always been a highly sought-after career route; however it has always been notoriously difficult to get any kind of meaningful work experience to consolidate further interest, and support university applications due to client confidentiality and obligations held by therapists in this profession. This ‘Extend pathway’ is the ideal opportunity to get a highly unique experience in this field.
What will it involve?
There will be a strong emphasis on practical experience and you will be undertaking a range of rudimentary activities that encourage an understanding of the underlying principles of rehabilitation techniques. You will get hands on and learn introductory techniques of sports massage utilising our own sports therapy treatment rooms, as well as classroom-based sessions which delve into the theoretical side of sports injury identification, response and models of rehabilitation. In addition to the practical and theoretical concepts of this extend pathway, you will also get insight into the concept of strapping and taping for the purposes of prevention and rehabilitation.
You will need a strong interest in rehabilitative therapy and be prepared to roll your sleeves up and develop massage techniques on fellow students following this pathway. Throughout the programme you will be expected to keep an up to date workbook on both the practical and theoretical concepts being delivered, and your level of competence will be assessed throughout by our own trained sports therapists.
How might it help in the future?
Completion of this pathway will enable you to talk openly about your knowledge and understanding, thus giving depth to an application to study at a higher education level. This is also something that you could continue studying here at Exeter College as we have a very successful Foundation Degree (FdSc) and Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Sports Therapy.

What our students think?
“My course is really hands-on and practical, teaching us skills that you don’t get in the classroom. I really enjoy the theory too, we look at things like sports nutrition, health and safety and the history of the industry. The facilities at Haven Banks are fantastic.” Read more >
“I have always loved football and I want to go as far as I can, so training every day and playing competitive fixtures was what appealed to me about the Sports Academy. Also learning about the body and the more theoretical side of my studies has been really good too, the balance of both on... Read more >
“The Netball Academy has one fitness session a week in the gym, two netball skills sessions and Wednesdays are reserved for games as well, so it helps improve our overall fitness, team bonding, game play and skills. We have just won the Association of Colleges League and are officially the best College team in England.” Read more >
“I study PE, Biology and Psychology A Levels and find they link together nicely. I chose my subjects by thinking about what I enjoy the most and what could help lead to a career in Sports, as that is my main interest.” Read more >
