The course is designed to build your confidence in maths and teaches you how to apply practical skills to real life and work-based contexts. It is an excellent preparation for the adult GCSE Maths course.
Applicants may lack confidence with their maths skills (e.g. not know their times tables). Bilingual learners should ideally be fluent speakers of English who have achieved ESOL Level 1 in reading and speaking/listening.

Topics are based around everyday situations that require maths skills in the workplace or in leisure. For example working out discounts – what is 15% off £80? Learners study fractions, simple graphs, shape and area, and measurement in addition to consolidating their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

Please note, Functional Skills and GCSE courses are designed for students who can communicate confidently and fluently in English and a fee applies to overseas students. A full ESOL Level 2 qualification or equivalent standard is required for all second language applicants. When we receive your application form, you will be invited for an English and Maths assessment and interview. The assessment is to ensure you are placed on the right level course.
