Teaching is undertaken in both theoretical aspects and practical workshop-type environments. The Faculty has dedicated IT Labs for students’ use which enables learners to investigate computer hardware within a controlled environment adding to the high practical content.
You will also be expected to undertake study in your own time, researching topics, writing up tasks and revising. Your personal tutor will advise, help and encourage you with your work at college. The course is assessed via formal exams and assignments – in the form of written work, question and answer sessions or practical demonstrations.
What topics will I study?
Course units first year:
- Information Technology Systems
- Website Development
Course units second year:
- Cyber Security and Incident Management
- Relational Database Development
Over the two years you will:
- Build a foundation in how information technology systems operate, including transmitting data, operating online, protecting data and information,
- Explore the broader impact on individuals, businesses, society and the economy of using IT, and how digital innovation is shaping our future.
- Learn how to design and build a website using HTML and CSS, applying user-focused design principles. This unit is assessed through coursework.
- Use industry-standard tools and work in a specialist IT lab that mirrors real-world working environments.
- Explore Cyber Security, learning how to identify threats, assess vulnerabilities, and apply practical methods to protect systems and data. This is a critical area in the IT industry and one of increasing importance across all sectors.
- Design, develop and manage a relational database system gaining hands-on experience in data modelling, query design and creating accessible output’s for end users.
- You will have the option to join several exciting trips to see IT in industry and Gaming exhibitions.
What can I study alongside this course?
This course can be combined with 2 A Levels and an Extend course to make a full programme.
Next steps:
You can progress to further studies in IT, for example, you could go on to study a Computing Higher National Diploma (HND) at Exeter College, a Higher-level apprenticeships in roles such as Data Technician, IT Support Technician or Software Developer or you could go on to apply for employment in a wide range of roles that value IT skills.
It complements a wide range of subjects, particularly those with a creative, technical or career-focused emphasis such as Media Studies, Graphics, Business, Computer Science and Maths.
This course is equivalent to one A Level, so can also be used for progression to university.
- Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirements: Eight GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including English Language and Maths).
Subject specific entry requirements or recommendations: In addition, learners are expected to have an interest in the use and application of computers and/or information technology.
- Facilities

You will have access to a Learning Resource Centre (LRC) with a range of books and journals including many available electronically. Additionally there are study spaces with access to PCs.
The faculty has an IT Lab with a curriculum support technician allowing learners to investigate the workings of modern PCs and networks. Practical sessions include the provision for dismantling and assembling computer hardware as well as configuring and managing local computer networks and server technologies.
As a student of the IT course, learners will have the opportunity to apply for access to free software from Microsoft to support their studies.
There are refectories in Hele Road, Victoria House and Centre for Creative Industries serving hot and cold drinks and snacks.
