Introduction to German – Extend Option

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

Why do this course?

This course is for you if you are interested in German culture but never had an opportunity to study German at school.

What will it involve?

We will concentrate on the skills of listening, speaking and reading. We will use games, paper-based materials and online materials. There will be speaking and listening in pairs and small groups to improve your skills and confidence. We will learn to talk about: ourselves, where we live, food and drink, what we do in our free time, dealing with illnesses, your daily routine, finding your way around, shopping.

How might it help me in the future?

Whatever plans you may have for the future, knowledge of German will increase your options. When you learn German, you acquire a range of skills which can improve the quality of both your work and private life:

The Global Career: Knowledge of German increases your job opportunities with German and foreign companies in your own country and abroad. Proficiency in German helps you to function productively for an employer with global business connections.

Business: Knowing the language of your German business partners improves your relations and therefore your chances for effective communication and success.

Science and Research: German is the second most commonly used scientific language. Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad.

Opportunities to study/work in Germany: Germany awards a generous number of scholarships and other support to study in Germany.

Travel: Make the most of your travels not only in German-speaking countries, but in many other European countries where German is widely spoken, especially in Eastern Europe.
