Overview

Massage is one of the most immediate, accessible and pleasurable complementary therapies. Massage therapy works by stimulating the body’s self-healing mechanism to function efficiently. Massage therapy is a valuable tool in helping people suffering from stress-related problems and gives a boost to their autonomic nervous system which governs the involuntary movement of smooth muscle affecting hearing, glands, circulation and digestion. Massage helps improve the efficient drainage of waste products and improve the circulation of blood and lymph.

All movements will be practised on a fellow student. Once you have gained sufficient skills you will improve your massage technique on paying clients prior to graded assessments.

Teaching and learning methods

This course helps you develop the correct practical skills of massage and to understand the physiology and anatomy of the body. The body massage routine includes a range of movements: Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement and an introduction to the mechanical massage.

Modules and assessment

Initially practical classes allow learners to develop personal massage skills on fellow students. Once a level of competence is reached clients are to be used for case studies and assessment. There is theory work and home study which is essential for some anatomy, physiology and project work. Learners are assessed practically, theoretically and orally. Completed portfolios are verified and should include assessment books, case studies, projects and theoretical papers /on-line tests. Assessment is on paying clients.
