What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This is a competency-based course recognising your ability to gain a good knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse. To enable you to perform various tasks and procedures in your workplace or dental setting.

You will be observed on a regular basis in your setting which completes the practical side of the portfolio, the theory aspects are covered by tutorials, assignments and professional discussions.

There are four mandatory exam units to the qualification, these are multiple choice online exams which are booked and sat here at the College. (Please note learners get two attempts per exam included in the fee).

Dates are as follows:

  • 16.09.2019 to 13.09.2021 - variable days
  • 13.01.2020 to 10.01.2022 - variable days
  • 14.04.2020 to 12.04.2022 - variable days

What topics will I study?

You will undertake 15 mandatory unit's examples of which are listed below:

  • First aid
  • Roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse
  • Radiography
  • Health and safety
  • Prepare and maintain the clinical environment
  • Provide chairside support for non-surgical endodontic treatment
  • Principles of infection control
  • Provide information and support to patients on their oral health
  • Provide chairside support for the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery.

What are the entry requirements?

Firstly, you must be working in a dental or hospital setting and have completed a DBS/CRB check for your employer. To be a dental nurse you will need to have some vaccinations including Hep B, this is a mandatory requirement, and your employers should help you with this.

You will need excellent communication and organisation skills and be motivated to learn.

At college interview you will meet your tutor, assessor and complete a skills scan. 

A GCSE grade C is desirable in Maths and English.

What facilities are there?

You will have full use of the LRC at the College and access to computers and resources when needed.

What can the course lead on to?

You can take further courses in Dental radiography, Dental nursing sedation, and Oral health. These courses aren't currently available through the college. You can also apply to universities to become a dentist or hygienist should you wish to do so.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need to purchase a text book – approximately £30.

What do our students think?

I really enjoyed completing my Diploma with the College, I was able to complete the assignments in my own time and at a pace I found suitable to me. The theory was informative and matched the practical learning I received at work.

It is important that you apply and pay for your course at least one week before the course starts to ensure that you will have access to all the facilities and resources in your first week.
Please be aware that there are no car parking facilities at Exeter College city centre sites, but public car parks are available across the city.
