The French AS/A Level course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society. It fosters a range of transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking and creativity, which are valuable to the individual and to society.
You will study an AS Level in the first year of this course.
This course is ideal if you enjoy communicating with other people, have a good memory, and find problem solving stimulating.
Assessment is by externally assessed oral and written examinations, with listening, reading, grammar translation tasks and essays.
You will:
- Learn about many aspects of life in contemporary France and the Francophonie
- Learn from a native speaker and may have the opportunity to travel to France
- Watch French films and read French literature
- Increase your range of vocabulary and improve your understanding of grammar
- Research an area of particular interest in your individual project
- Acquire a deeper cultural awareness of French speaking communities
This course can be combined with other courses to make a full programme. It goes well with another foreign language and with A Levels in English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Geography, History, Sociology or any other subject which may lead to an international career.
Next steps: You could go on to study at university, whether you specialise in French or combine the language with another subject.
- Entry Requirements

You will need eight GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including English Language and Maths).
You will also need a Grade 6 or above in GCSE French. Other experience in French may be taken into account.
- Facilities

You will have access to several Learning Resource Centres (LRCs). There is a refectory in the Hele Building and in other areas of the College.
