Analytical and Forensic Science – Extend Option
Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.
Why do this course?
This course is for you if you are interested in the application of science, specifically forensic and analytical science. You will gain insights into how biology, chemistry and physics can benefit criminal cases, help solve crime and bring justice in society. You will develop skills in problem solving, investigative work, analysis, and the presentation of science within a courtroom setting.
What will it involve?
You will have to think outside of the box and gather information before reaching conclusions. The variety of the subject will be useful to anyone studying biology, chemistry or physics as well as those who want to improve their investigative and research skills.
You will participate in a variety of sessions such as lectures, practicals and case work. The sessions will cover basics in a variety of forensic disciplines such as DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, toxicology, and blood spatter analysis. You will also learn about how crime scenes are recorded and documented as well as how certain evidence can lead to convictions and intelligence gathering. You will also gain an understanding in how police investigations run and where the forensic evidence fits in. Using all this knowledge, you will then apply it to case work and using results from laboratory work as well as other information, fit the pieces together to solve the case!
How might it help in the future?
This option is ideal if you are interested in a career within forensic science or within any security and defence industry.

What our students think?
“Physics is my favourite subject and I particularly enjoy atomic physics. There is a helpful link between Physics and Maths, which is very interesting and lots of cross over, for example, when studying kinematics.” Read more >
“Maths can help you build your confidence to try more things, as it’s really rewarding when you get the right answers and figure things out by yourself.” Read more >
“I study PE, Biology and Psychology A Levels and find they link together nicely. I chose my subjects by thinking about what I enjoy the most and what could help lead to a career in Sports, as that is my main interest.” Read more >
