Overview

This Beginners to Intermediate course is focussed on using clay to sculpt the human figure and head. For some sessions our life models may be clothed but are often nude. For those who are new to clay sculpture a portrait head is a good place to start, students with some experience may prefer to work on the whole figure. Whatever you produce can be fired in a kiln and taken away at the end of the course.

You will receive tuition as a group as well as individually. There is no formal assessment, but you will have continuous feedback and advice about your progress.

Your tutor will give you guidance in the basic techniques and the following areas in particular will be covered:

  • Making observations of the human figure and head for modelling in clay
  • Basic measurements of the human form; an introduction to the properties of clay
  • Modelling techniques including use of various tools and preparation of clay for kiln

It may be possible for other techniques to be covered on an individual basis according to your requirements.

The College will provide tools, clay, glazing and firing facilities.
