The Introduction to Counselling course is Quality Checked by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).
Please note: This course alone is not a route to the Accredited Register, nor does it fully equip a graduate to practise as a qualified counsellor.
This informative and accessible course is ideal for those considering training to become a practising counsellor, as well as those seeking a valuable stand-alone experience in effective listening and enhanced self-awareness. It offers an initial exploration of counselling and its practical use, making it suitable for anyone looking to strengthen their interpersonal skills.
Throughout the sessions, students will have the opportunity to develop their self-awareness, practise active listening, and foster healthy, effective communication.
The course is unassessed and requires no prior learning or counselling experience.
Sessions follow a balanced agenda that includes taught material, experiential exercises, group discussion, and feedback.
Skills developed during the course are transposable to both personal and professional contexts—making it equally useful for those simply attending out of interest or for a single-day experience.
This course is also a valuable entry point for those interested in progressing to further training, including our Level 3 Counselling courses at Exeter College.
Teaching and learning methods: Delivered by a qualified counselling practitioner, the course combines teaching, group activities, and reflection tasks.

All abilities welcome (good general English skills required, e.g. a good pass in GCSE English Language).
- Facilities

Learners will be given a College ID badge and have access to all College facilities, including Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) and computers. This course is held at the Digital and Data Centre (IoT) on our Hele Road site. Please note that there is no available parking at city centre College sites. Charged parking is available in public car parks nearby.
