Overview

This occupational entry qualification provides the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in fitness coaching including how to plan, deliver and supervise safe and effective exercise programmes as well conducting small group sessions. It covers an understanding of anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness. The qualification also provides an understanding of professionalism, personal development and how to deliver exceptional customer service. 

On this course you will study: 

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise 
  • Principles of fitness training 
  • Principles of nutrition and lifestyle 
  • Health and safety in a fitness environment 
  • Professionalism and customer care 
  • Conducting client consultations 
  • Planning and delivering fitness sessions 
  • Leisure team operations  

Assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge assessments – range of different types of questions in an exam 
  • Case studies – briefs to demonstrate application of knowledge and skills in a specific context 
  • Assignments – constructed briefs/tasks  
  • Observations and questionings – practical application to demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours with further questioning. 

Extras: 

  • You will gain valuable experience through working in the Central Fitness gym, delivering inductions and a variety of fitness sessions 
  • You will gain qualifications in instructing studio cycling, circuits and kettlebells 

Choose this course if… you have the aspiration of working in the fitness industry as a Fitness Instructor or wish to study to become a Personal Trainer. 

Future Steps: You will be able to progress to a more advanced course, such as the Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Personal Training or to an Apprenticeship in the fitness industry. Future job roles might include working in the fitness industry as a fitness instructor and leading group exercise sessions such as kettlebells, studio cycling and circuits.  

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including either GCSE Maths or GCSE English. If you don’t have a grade 4 in English or Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course.  

You will need the personal qualities for working in the health and fitness industry and enthusiasm for sport. 

Facilities

Victoria House is the main building used by the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education for the delivery of your programme of study. You will also have access and free membership to Central Fitness gym, the Sports Hall and all other aspects of the faculty’s provision.
