What is it like to study this course and how will I be assessed?

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Therapy aims to provide you with a range of essential technical and practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or further training within the beauty industry.

Your programme of study will include practical and theoretical classes which will provide you with a real opportunity to gain work specific skills and knowledge in beauty therapy.  Practical skills are developed on fellow students; once a level of competence is reached, you will then work on clients in our well-equipped beauty clinics. Whilst studying you will have the opportunity to engage in enrichment activities and workshops. These may include development of employability skills, employer involvement activities, team work and promotional events, communications and client care; all of which are important when you are thinking about working in the beauty industry. 

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:

One externally set, internally marked and externally moderated assignment (Practical based). In this synoptic assignment you will showcase a selection of skills, techniques, concepts and theories from across the programme area.

One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions (Theoretical based). This exam is designed to assess the depth and breadth of knowledge of the programme, using a range of question types.

One optional unit assessment as required.

This qualification is graded:  Pass / Merit / Distinction / Distinction*

What topics will I study?

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the beauty industry. You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Principles of practice for Beauty Therapists
  • Hair removal treatments
  • Facial and skin analysis
  • Manicure Treatments
  • Pedicure Treatments
  • Light cured gel polish
  • Lash and brow Treatments
  • Apply make - up services

Plus one optional unit to enrich your knowledge and skill

What experiences will I get?

You will work in our well-equipped beauty clinics and Spa, offering treatments to a wide range of clients. You will also have the opportunity to attend master class workshops and employer involvement activities.

These can include: Dermalogicia workshops, Residential visits with master class opportunities in make-up; Beauty exhibitions, lectures from industry experts, PHD roll on Waxing, Advanced eye brow and eye lash systems. 

What are the entry requirements?

English and Maths entry requirements: Grade 4 English language and Grade 3 in Maths.

Plus standard entry requirements: Two GCSE’s at grade 3 or above, or equivalent (Level 1 Diploma in Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector)

Subject specific entry requirements or recommendations: GCSE grade 3 in Science.

What can I study alongside this course?

This course is studied on its own and cannot be combined with other courses.

What facilities are there?

There are five fully equipped beauty clinics and a Spa, providing you with a professional working environment. You will have access to learning resource centres and there is a refectory in the Hele building. There are personal lockers and changing facilities for learners to use whilst they are at college.

What can the course lead on to?

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the essential technical skills, knowledge of health and safety and customer service to be employed as a beauty therapist. Following successful completion of this qualification you will be qualified to work in a number of employment destinations such as; beauty salons, cosmetic companies, spas, hotels or health clubs.

Alternatively this qualification will allow you to progress onto the Level 3 Technical Diploma in Beauty and Spa Therapy.  This will enhance the skills and knowledge that you have gained at level two to progress into senior job roles and a wider career choice.

Are there any additional costs?

You will be required to purchase a personal kit and uniform.

There are options to attend enrichment workshops and educational visits at an additional cost.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
