- Why do this course?
-
The course is designed to help you discover the richness of knowledge and realise how empowering it can be. It will help you become a more reflective and philosophical thinker, skills which are essential to gaining the very top grades on A Level courses. The course will enable you to:
- Reflect on how we learn;
- Make links between different academic disciplines as well as our thoughts, feelings and actions;
- See that there are many different ways of thinking and perspectives, and challenge assumptions we may have because of our cultural and individual positions.
- What will it involve?
-
You will investigate ‘ways of knowing’, such as perception, emotion, reason and faith, and also ‘areas of knowledge’, such as mathematics, the natural and human sciences, history, ethics and the arts. As part of the critical thinking element, ‘knowledge issues’ will be explored in tandem with the above – questioning the limitations of the ways and areas of knowledge.
There is a focus on applying the course content to contemporary issues and real-life scenarios in an attempt to make the course as relevant as possible to your life. You will be expected to keep a journal, which will be a reflective log of your journey throughout the course as well as taking part in presentations and written tasks.
- How might it help in the future?
-
Developing your own philosophical thinking skills can be critical to high level success in a range of A Level courses. Universities and employers want students who can think in the abstract, think clearly and problem solve. This course will enable you to develop these desirable skills and so is an excellent choice for well-rounded university and job applications.
