Overview

This Apprenticeship is aimed at anyone wanting to develop the knowledge, skills, behaviours and professional qualifications needed to work in the health and fitness industry as a Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer. Learners interested in this Apprenticeship standard need to have a firm interest in the health and fitness industry and must be passionate about helping to develop the wellbeing of others. Learners must be able to work independently and be self-motivated.

Topics include:

  • Leading group and individual health fitness and wellbeing sessions to a range of cliental.
  • Knowledge of business and how to market, lead and review business performance.

Apprentices will need to be working towards and achieve the following job role requirements before their end point assessment:

  • Lead health, fitness and wellbeing sessions to a range of cliental
  • Review individual and group performance, identifying areas in need of development
  • Implement strategies to improve client performance
  • Develop a functional knowledge of healthy and safe practices when leading physical activity sessions

Next Steps: On completion you could progress on to Fitness management or further training to become a specialist instructor or go into employment within a public leisure facility or a private gym/health centre.

Entry Requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you ideally need GCSE grade 4 in English Language and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your Apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

Ideally you should  have gained the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (gym-based) qualification and gained the required additional experience of working in a gym with different types of client groups. The Level 2 qualification can be discussed at interview.

Facilities

This Apprenticeship takes place mainly with your employer but when at College you will mainly be at Victoria house in Exeter.

Exeter College has outstanding sports and fitness facilities, including a high specification, purpose built Sports Hall with a well equipped Gym and dance studio.

Apprentices have access to all facilities across the College. Our Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) give you access to a huge range of online books and resources to help you with your studies.
