Hall & Woodhouse Partners with Exeter College Launch Chef Apprenticeship Programme
Hall & Woodhouse, a family-owned hospitality business with a proud 248-year heritage, is excited to announce a new partnership with Exeter College to deliver its Level 3 Senior Production Chef Apprenticeship programme.

Jill Meyerhoff, Head of Recruitment and Immigration at Hall & Woodhouse, shared the vision behind the initiative:
“We’re thrilled to be working with Exeter College, one of four institutions selected for our chef apprenticeship scheme. Exeter stood out thanks to its outstanding Ofsted reports, a flexible and forward-thinking approach to learning, and a passionate team who truly understood our goals.”
Hall & Woodhouse operates across the South of England, including Bath, Bristol, London, Sussex, Southampton, and Devon. With over 1,700 team members, the business spans hospitality, brewing, and property, and is committed to nurturing talent and promoting career growth from within.
“Our apprenticeship programme is designed to equip aspiring chefs not only with technical skills but also with life skills and leadership potential,” Meyerhoff explained.
“We want our learners to grow into roles such as Sous Chef, Head Chef, or even General Manager – many of whom have chef experience themselves.”
The apprenticeship is structured as a monthly programme over 13 months, combining theory, practical cooking sessions, and independent learning. Apprentices are paid for their time in the kitchen, and all associated costs – including travel and learning materials – are fully covered by Hall & Woodhouse.
Sam Wilson, Director of Apprenticeships at Exeter College, added:
“We are incredibly proud to be working in partnership with Hall & Woodhouse to deliver the Chef Apprenticeship Programme. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of culinary talent and providing apprentices with the skills, confidence and experience to thrive in such a dynamic industry. Exeter College is home to one of the South West’s outstanding apprenticeship provisions for aspiring chefs, and together with Hall & Woodhouse we are ensuring that opportunities for professional growth in the region remain strong, ambitious and future-focused.”

The partnership also reflects Hall & Woodhouse’s core values, particularly kindness. “In our kitchens, kindness is non-negotiable,” Meyerhoff emphasised.
“New learners are welcomed into a culture where questions are encouraged, support is always available, and everyone is treated with respect. It’s about creating an environment where people can be the best version of themselves.”
With this initiative, Hall & Woodhouse continues its commitment to developing future leaders in hospitality, fostering talent, and building a culture of excellence and care.
