Overview

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

Why do this course?

This course is for you if you:

  • Are interested in how we learn languages;
  • Would like to gain a better awareness of English grammar;
  • Are interested in learning some basic teaching techniques and developing your confidence;
  • Would like to learn more about the varieties of English spoken in the world.

This course would be particularly beneficial to you if you are:

  • Studying English Language or MFL at A Level;
  • Planning to go abroad as part of their university course to work as a language assistant;
  • Considering taking a CELTA course in the future to travel and teach abroad;
  • Interested in teacher training in the future.

What will it involve?

  • Language learning: types of learner, barriers to learning, reflection on learning;
  • Grammar awareness: terminology, tenses, ‘word’ grammar;
  • Four skills across language learning: speaking, listening, reading, writing
  • Basic teaching methodology and theories;
  • International ‘English’: differences in types of English;
  • Micro teaches;
  • Career advice;
  • Cross cultural awareness: reasons for migration and challenges of living abroad.

How will it help me in the future?

A better knowledge of language learning and grammar will help you to develop your own language learning skills and language analysis. This could be beneficial for MFL or English Language courses at university. You will develop your confidence to present information and teach skills in an engaging way. Whatever career path you take, the ability to confidently present and communicate is highly desirable.
An increased cross-cultural awareness is essential to everyone in our increasingly globalised world – especially if you wish to travel. If you are considering taking a full TEFL course such as CELTA in the future (or even teacher training at university), this will give you a taste of the benefits and challenges of teaching.
