Sports Academy
Specialist academies to help you focus on your goal
Our Sports Academies are designed to help improve your performance and develop your individual skills; our Sports Academy provides opportunities to train or compete with likeminded gifted and talented individuals to reach your potential.
Exeter College Sports Academy students participate in a comprehensive training schedule which has been designed to improve their respective sport. Our detailed training programmes allow students to develop technical, tactical, mental and physical attributes to give them the tools to reach their potential. We have experienced lecturers and coaches who possess a wide range of coaching qualifications as well as sport specific understanding. Students have the opportunity to benefit from between four and seven hours per week of training and fixtures.
The Sports Academy has produced sports performers and teams of the highest quality – many of which have gone on to study at university level or have successful careers within sport.

How does it work?
Students all study a full time course and have the Sports Academy as an additional element on their College timetable. Being successful on your chosen pathway both academically and within your chosen sport is vitally important. This is achieved through a firm ethos of attendance, punctuality and completion of all academic work while engaging with our comprehensive sports provision. All learners are tutored throughout their programme and are encouraged to represent the College. Please be aware although there is flexibility in the Sports Academy programme, it may be difficult to accommodate all course choices alongside membership of the Academy. We will discuss this with you at interview and enrolment.
Once you have completed your College course application online your account page will update to so you can apply to the Academy. You can apply to College by clicking below. The deadline for applications for the 2026/27 academic year will be February half term 2026, with trials scheduled to start around the end of March.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join?
All students must successfully achieve the necessary entry requirements for a full time course at the College and be between 16 and 18 years of age. All applying students must apply online. Your account homepage will update automatically once you have submitted your College application. You will be called for an interview for your academic course with a member of your chosen faculty.
The deadline for applications for the 2026/27 academic year will be February half term 2026, with trials scheduled to start around the end of March.
What will I have to do in trials
For our team Sports Academies applicants undertake performance trials which are scheduled prior to commencing studies at Exeter College. Here assessment is made based on skills, fitness, decision-making, position specific strengths, conditioned game scenarios, overall attitude and work ethic.
For ACES we hold an open evening to outline the programme and ask for coach and teacher references to support applications.
How much does it cost?
The Sports Academy is self-funding and therefore the Academy fees create the budget to run the programme. A 10% discounted rate is available for the “Early Bird payment”. The fees are paid annually and vary depending on which Academy is selected. Prices exclude Sports Academy Kit, second year students do not need to purchase new kit.
All Sports Academy Students will have a membership to Exeter College Central Fitness included in their academy fees, with additional Strength and Conditioning available via a bookings system. Our state-of-the-art Fitness Centre on our Victoria House campus creates an excellent environment to support sports performers, featuring cardio and resistance machines, free weights, spinning studio, lifting platform and an array of specialist conditioning and testing apparatus. The facility is also supported by our Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor students and staff.
Academy students also have access to free Sports Therapy clinics which can be booked, free of charge, within Academy sessions. Our Foundation Degree Sports Therapy students also have some capacity to support our teams on match days.
