Space Science – Extend Option

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

A look at the fascinating field of astronomy and the science of space. You will learn about what we know about the heavens, how we have made some key discoveries, how telescopes work and have the opportunity to analyse data from some of the world’s leading telescopes.

Why do this course?

If you are fascinated by Space and want to learn more.

Ideal if you are interested in our understanding of the Universe and want to appreciate more of the science behind it. Do it if you are interested in astronomy. Don’t do it if you are interested in astrology!!

What will it involve?

You will look at different kinds of celestial objects, how they are formed, the lifecycle of stars, how reflecting and refracting telescopes work, use lenses to build your own basic telescope, and what we are learning from some of the world’s leading current telescopes and associated projects. You will have the opportunity to take part in Citizen Science activities through some of these project’s website.

How might it help in the future?

This course will enrich your understanding of the Universe and support you if you want to go into a future career related to Astronomy or Space Science. This course will also be a good introduction to some of the material covered in the Astrophysics Topic of A level Physics.
