Meteorology and Weather Forecasting – Extend Option

Please note: This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

Why do this course?

This course is for you if you have interests or career plans that are affected by the weather. Pilots have to study meteorology to understand how to plan routes safely, sailors need to understand how weather patterns with affect the size of waves and the direction they can sail, and mountaineers do not want to be caught out in a blizzard. This course will teach you the fundamentals of weather forecasting and interpreting weather charts.

What will it involve?

You will start of but learning about the fundamentals that drive the major weather patterns around the globe and then how these affect the UK including low pressures, warm and cold fronts.  With this you will learn about the different air masses and expected weather as these systems pass over us. Along side this you will learn the practical skills of interpreting weather observations that are plotted on chart in order to draw on isobars and fronts in practical sessions. Finally, you will be writing your own forecasts for different situations using your own hand analysed charts. This year we have been able to use live data form Storm Ciarán for chart practice.

How might it help in the future?

Key to many outdoor activities is understanding the impact of the environment on safety. Watching how the weather and clouds change around you is key to knowing what is coming and using Met Office weather charts allows you to understand what is on the way and how it will impact on you. Pilots have to pass the meteorology module and this will give you a head start.
