This course can be combined with others and sits well alongside three other A Levels, however it cannot be taken alongside AS Fine Art.
Overview
Are you a budding creative filmmaker? If so, then this course offers an excellent career start. This course is designed to build your creative film making and editing skills. Under the Art, Craft and Design specification, there is an emphasis on individual creativity.
Who is this course for?
Choose this course if you want to find your own style as a creative filmmaker. Many film and digital art students have gone on to win or be shortlisted for regional, national and international short film competitions, which you will be encouraged to take part in throughout the course.
- What you will study

On this course you will:
- Experiment with different film styles with our industry-standard equipment
- Learn how to analyse films in Hollywood and art-cinema forms, and apply these ideas to your own work
- Work with musicians, actors, artists and local arts organisations such as Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Exeter Phoenix
- Visit centres of excellence such as the Bill Douglas Centre, Harry Potter World and We The Curious

Work is assessed against four objectives: developing ideas through research, experimenting with materials and techniques, recording and reflecting on progress, and presenting a personal response.
Your work will be assessed informally throughout the course. Your final grade is determined by an external moderator, end of course assessment of the portfolio unit and an externally set assignment unit.

Eight GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths
Grade 4 or above in GCSE Art is preferable
Some experience of film, video or artwork would be useful, but is not essential
Progression and careers
You could progress to specialist courses at Exeter College, including a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Alternatively, a university degree in your chosen area of interest or pursue a career path in film or animation. There is a strong progression rate to film and digital art degrees from this programme. Future job roles might include animator, music video maker, game designer, film editor, audio visual designer, videographer, cinematographer.

We follow the OCR specification.
- Is there an exam?

There is no formal written exam in this subject. There is no exam in the first year. In the second year, students complete an externally set assignment, which includes 15 hours of unaided, supervised work.
- Do I need my own camera?

No. The college has cameras you can borrow, and a good quality phone camera can be used for some work. Having access to your own camera can be helpful, and some students choose to buy one as their interest in photography grows.
- Is there homework?

Yes. Students are expected to develop their coursework independently outside lessons. This might include practical work, film shoots, practicing techniques or continuing their digital sketchbook.
