This course gives you the essential vehicle maintenance and repair knowledge if you wish to work in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist motor cycle and body repair shops. You will cover theoretical and practical aspects such as routine servicing of vehicles, body repairs techniques and identifying and rectifying faults.
Assessment of each award is made up of three components – Practical Assessments, Centre Devised Assessment Methods and External Testing.
The course is structured to allow you to find a work experience opportunity alongside your College training. This may significantly improve your chances of progressing to an Apprenticeship at the end of this course.
The award is made up of a series of units that cover specific topics. These topics are delivered by classroom lectures and practical sessions in the vehicle workshop. Each of the units contains a number of learning outcomes. In order to pass and achieve certification, students must achieve all of the unit’s learning outcomes, by completing the underpinning knowledge assessment criteria.
You will:
- Learn theory and practical skills including identification of vehicle components
- Use the latest equipment and vehicles in a realistic, industry standard environment
- Visit garages and shows
- Take optional, additional courses in hybrid and electric vehicle technology and welding
- Develop soft skills, such as communication and employer expectations, to prepare you for the industry
- Have opportunities for work experience alongside your studies
- Gain the practical skills needed to complete your GCSE English Language and Maths
There are opportunities for work experience alongside your studies and to visit garages and industry related shows. You could take optional, additional courses in hybrid and electric vehicle technology.
Future Steps: You could go on to further study, such as the Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – Light Vehicle IMIAL Level 2 Diploma or an Apprenticeship.
- Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English Language and Maths. If you don’t have a grade 4 in English and Maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course. We will also consider your existing academic or vocational qualifications and experience and interest in working in the industry.

- A large fully equipped workshop
- Vehicles which are less than five years old
- A state of the art automotive diagnostic laboratory with test simulators and rigs
- A dedicated IT laboratory with internet access
- Specific automotive training classrooms
The Technology Centre combines the training and teaching of aerospace, engineering and automotive students with access to state of the art equipment within world class facilities. The centre houses the latest vehicles and automotive training resources. You will have access to a Learning Resource Centre (LRC).
