Overview

The Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship prepares apprentices to produce, assemble, refurbish and test complex, high-value, low-volume engineering components and systems. Engineering fitters work across manufacturing and process sectors, using a range of tools, equipment and engineering techniques to manufacture and assemble products such as turbines, cranes, gearboxes, production lines, rigs and platforms. Apprentices develop the skills to work accurately to specifications, maintain quality standards and operate safely within engineering environments.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is suitable for individuals looking to begin or progress a career in engineering manufacturing and assembly. It is ideal for those interested in mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, instrumentation or pipe fitting disciplines. The programme is designed for people who enjoy problem-solving, precision work and working with engineering equipment, machinery and systems. Typical job titles include Mechanical Fitter, Electrical Fitter, Electronic Fitter, Instrumentation Fitter, Pipe Fitter, and Controls and Systems Fitter.

What you will study

During the apprenticeship, you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work as a competent engineering fitter, including:

  • Interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, diagrams and work instructions.
  • Planning engineering tasks and preparing materials, resources, tools and equipment.
  • Producing and refurbishing engineering components and assemblies.
  • Assembling complex equipment, machinery and systems.
  • Using engineering hand tools, power tools and measuring equipment safely.
  • Carrying out testing, inspection, calibration and quality assurance activities.
  • Diagnosing faults and solving engineering problems.
  • Understanding engineering materials, manufacturing processes and assembly techniques.
  • Applying health, safety and environmental requirements in the workplace.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement activities and efficient engineering operations.
  • Completing engineering and quality documentation accurately.
Assessment

Apprentices are assessed against the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard. Throughout the programme, apprentices demonstrate competence in planning, manufacturing, assembly, inspection, fault diagnosis and quality assurance activities, ensuring they can perform safely and effectively within an engineering environment.

Entry requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you will need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

Progression and careers

Progression is on to the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Aeronautical Engineering or on to an Apprenticeship in Aeronautical Maintenance. Future job roles might include aeronautical technician, B licence engineer or junior mechanic. Alternatively, you may choose to progress on to university.
