Overview

This real-world course prepares you to work effectively and safely in an electrotechnical environment and is ideal for anyone who wants to become a fully qualified  electrician.

Who is this course for?

Choose this course if you would like to learn about the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring systems in our homes, businesses, and factories and enjoy solving mathematical and scientific construction problems.

What you will study

Students develop a combination of practical electrical skills and technical knowledge. They learn about electrical installations, wiring systems, circuits, electrical components, safe isolation, testing principles and working safely. Practical workshop sessions allow students to develop their skills using industry-standard tools and equipment.

On this course you will cover:

Assessment

You will have a combination of online exams and practical exercises.

Entry Requirements

You will need a Grade 4 or above in both GCSE English Language and Maths.

Additional Costs

You will need to have your own overalls and safety boots- advice will be given at interview. If you are required to purchase a subject specific course book you will be advised either at interview or at the start of the course plus a suitable calculator.

There is a non-refundable Workshop Fee of £35 per full time student per year. This will contribute towards the cost of tools for use in the workshop so that you do not need to provide your own. It will also cover the cost of one Hi-Viz jacket, one pair of safety glasses and one pair of gloves.

If you require a CSCS card, the cost will be an additional £58.50.

Progression and careers

Students can progress to the next level of Electrical Installation, move into an electrical apprenticeship, or progress towards employment within the electrical and wider construction industry. We support students throughout the course to understand the different progression routes available.

For an apprenticeship you need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve the requirements, either prior to your apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme. You could also progress to a T Level. You will be required to demonstrate that you are enthusiastic and committed to succeeding.

Can the course lead to an apprenticeship or employment?

Yes. A key aim of the full-time Electrical course is to prepare students for progression into an electrical apprenticeship. Alongside their technical and practical skills, students develop the behaviours employers expect, including good attendance, punctuality, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and a professional attitude.

How will attendance, behaviour and progress be monitored?

Attendance, punctuality, behaviour and progress are monitored throughout the year. Students complete practical and theoretical assessments and receive regular feedback from their tutors. Where concerns arise, we work with the student and, where appropriate, communicate with parents/carers so that issues can be addressed early.

What support is available if I am struggling?

Students can access support with their practical electrical skills, technical theory, maths and English, wellbeing and personal development. Electrical courses can involve a significant amount of maths and technical knowledge, so tutors will identify areas where additional support is needed and help students develop the confidence and skills required to progress.
