Frequently Asked Questions

What will my average week look like? Will I have to work with customers and clients? Will I work late?

This is a professional qualification with a strong practical focus. You will usually have three practical sessions each week alongside theory lessons. During Term 1, you will learn and practise Swedish massage, spa therapies and Indian Head massage techniques on classmates to develop your confidence and treatment skills. (for the extended route you will also complete facial electrical treatments) Within one clinic session you will also complete Level 2 beauty treatments on clients to maintain and further develop your skills.

Once you are competent, your practical learning will take place through working on paying clients while completing the required treatment ranges and portfolio evidence.

As this reflects industry practice, client sessions may occasionally extend beyond standard lesson times.

What's different about this course than my time at school?

You will be treated as a trainee therapist and expected to work to industry standards and leading on pamper days, supporting on reception. The course is more independent, with higher expectations for professionalism, organisation and client care.

What will I have to wear?

You will wear a professional therapist uniform and be expected to maintain excellent standards of hygiene, appearance and conduct at all times. For health, safety and hygiene reasons, all jewellery must be removed before practical sessions and while working in the salon, as well as your hair to be tied back.

How am I assessed throughout the year?

You will be assessed throughout the year through practical observations while working on clients, building a portfolio of observed treatments that demonstrates your competence across the required treatment ranges. Alongside your portfolio of practical evidence you will complete online external multiple-choice examinations, and undertake assignments that demonstrate your underpinning knowledge. In addition to the unit examinations, you will complete two larger Anatomy and Physiology examinations that underpin your understanding of the body’s systems to support your treatment practices. Throughout the course, you will learn about the contraindications and contra-actions associated with each treatment area to ensure treatments are carried out safely and appropriately, maintaining professional standards and protecting both yourself and your clients. External online examinations usually begin during the second half of Term 1 and continue throughout Term 2 as units are completed.

What will I do in tutorial and what enrichment is on offer?

Tutorial sessions follow Exeter College’s ECHOES Personal Development Curriculum and cover topics such as wellbeing, safeguarding, healthy relationships, equality and diversity, careers, employability and preparing for your next steps after college. You will also review your progress, set targets and receive support to help you succeed on your course.

Enrichment opportunities may include visits to professional beauty trade shows, guest speakers from the cruise ship industry, and product training sessions delivered by industry brands such as MONU Skin Care, helping you gain valuable insight into the beauty industry and career opportunities available.
