This Apprenticeship is aimed at engineers looking to progress from Level 2 Engineering Operative to develop a higher level of knowledge, skills and professional behaviours in their chosen industry-specific pathway.
Apprentices will gain practical experience in a wide range of engineering processes. You may be working in a range of disciplines, such as engineering maintenance, mechanical manufacturing, fabrication and welding, quality control or technical support.
Different pathways include: Engineering Technician, Machinist Technician, Engineering Fitter, Plate Welder and Metal Fabricator
On this Apprenticeship you will:
- Develop your practical workplace skills relevant to your job role
- Understand the theory behind these skills and learn how to translate engineering terms on to paper
- Learn how to work safely and efficiently in an engineering environment
- Use industry leading equipment in areas such as automation or Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/ CAM)
- Develop numeracy, literacy and IT skills
You will learn about:
- Health and safety in the engineering workplace
- Communications for engineering technicians
- Further Engineering Mathematics
- Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
- Mechanical principles of an engineering system
- Electro pneumatic and hydraulic system and devices
- Computer-aided drafting in engineering
- Monitoring and fault diagnosis of engineering systems
- Features and applications of electrical machines
- Principles and operation of three phase systems
- Electrical and electrical principles in engineering
Specialisms associated with this Apprenticeship:
- Mechatronics Maintenance Technician (Electrical or Mechanical)
- Product Design and Development Technician
- Tool Maker and Tool and Die Technician
- Technical Support Technician
Apprentices will need to be working towards and achieve the following job role requirements before their end point assessment:
- Apply safe systems of working
- Make a technical contribution to either the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, systems, processes or services
- Apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information
- Have a commitment to continued professional development
Future steps: On completion, apprentices can progress to the Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship or to a part time HNC and full time employment.
- Entry Requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you ideally need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths.
If you are 19 or over, functional skills are not required unless requested by the apprentice’s employer.
However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your Apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.
Students will need to have achieved the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship to progress on to this course.

Apprentices have access to all facilities across College. These include the College Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) and the College Gym.
Our world class Technology Centre provides aerospace, engineering and automotive students with state of the art equipment and learning spaces. Our CAD design suite includes 25 computers running the latest industry software, and the CAM workshop contains CNC machining equipment to give you an understanding of modern automated manufacture.
