Overview

The Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship develops the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to maintain, repair and improve complex automated equipment used in modern engineering and manufacturing environments. Technicians carry out a broad range of activities including installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modifications and planned maintenance across integrated systems that combine mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluid power and control technologies.

Mechatronics Maintenance Technicians play a key role in ensuring plant and equipment operate safely, efficiently and reliably to support production, quality and performance targets across a range of industries including aerospace, automotive, defence, logistics, pharmaceutical, energy and advanced manufacturing.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is ideal for individuals who want to develop a career in engineering maintenance and automated manufacturing systems. It is suited to those who enjoy problem-solving, working with technology and maintaining complex equipment.

Learners will develop the skills to work within engineering and manufacturing environments, interacting with engineers, technicians, production staff and managers while maintaining and improving modern automated systems.

What you will study

During the apprenticeship, you will learn how to:

  • Install, maintain and repair complex engineering equipment.
  • Diagnose faults and carry out corrective actions.
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance activities.
  • Test and commission engineering systems.
  • Work safely in engineering and manufacturing environments.
  • Complete technical documentation and maintenance records.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluid power and control systems.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques to support business performance.

Pathway Options

Mechanical Pathway

  • Mechanical maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Gearboxes, bearings and drive systems.
  • Mechanical fault diagnosis.
  • Installation and testing of mechanical equipment.

Electrical Pathway

  • Electrical maintenance and fault finding.
  • Electronic and control systems.
  • Sensors, motors and automation equipment.
  • Electrical testing and commissioning.
  • Automated manufacturing and control technologies.

Both pathways develop the broad mechatronics skills required to maintain integrated automated systems used throughout modern engineering and manufacturing industries.

Assessment

A summative assessment completed by an Independent End Point Assessor from SIAS once all on-programme elements have been completed.

The assessment method for Mechatronics Maintenance Technician includes:

  • Observation
  • Interview
Entry requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you will need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

If you are 19 or over, functional skills are not required unless requested by the apprentice’s employer.

Progression and careers

Successful apprentices can progress into a range of engineering maintenance and technical roles across advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors. Career opportunities include maintenance engineering, field service engineering and specialist automation roles.
