Skills Gateway – Prep for Employment

This hands on, practical, 1 year course aims to help you identify what you want to do for the future. If you are unsure as to the path you want to take, we will help you explore different options and develop the necessary skills to progress into a job, apprenticeship or supported internship.

Overview

This course can take place at either the Hele Road Centre in Exeter or the Centre for Progression in Tiverton.

Alongside GCSE Maths and English you will study a range of units designed to develop your skills and knowledge in preparation for progressing to another course or the world of work.

What topics will I study?

Considering your own Work-related Skills and Behaviour. You will explore your personal strengths, identify areas for development and understand how behaviours such as reliability, and communication support workplace success.

Participating in Work Experience Placement. You will complete a meaningful placement each term.  This will allow you to develop real workplace skills such as punctuality, teamwork and safe working practices.

Exploring the use of IT in the Workplace. You will learn how digital support systems help modern organisations and create digital materials used in workplace contexts.

Contributing to Teamworking. You will take part in tasks that help practice communications, problem-solving and co-operation.  You will learn how an effective team operates.

Supporting Health and Safety at Work. Know how to assess your own work area and understand who is responsible for safety in the workplace.

Prepare and participate in an interview Understand different interview types used in the recruitment process and undertake your own practice interview with a member of our team.

Assessment:

The BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Workskills consists of 6 assignments which are set and completed during class time.

Next steps:

The aim would be to progress into employment, an Apprenticeship or Supported Internship.

Entry Requirements

Students are expected to be working in the region of Grade 2 at GCSE, but all students are assessed on an individual basis.

Facilities

You will have access to the full range of learning centres and IT rooms as well as the college’s coffee shops, teaching kitchen’s and gym.

Additional Costs

There are no specific costs associated with this course but there may be an option to join additional college trips and visits which may need to be paid for.
