Overview

Software Development Technicians are the supportive entry level team members helping to create computer programmes. Some assist in developing the applications that allow people to do specific tasks on a computer or another device. Others assist in developing the underlying systems that run the devices or that control networks.

Who is this course for?

Choose this apprenticeship if you are interested in working with computer software, coding and enjoy problem-solving.

What you will study

You will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of all stages of the software development life cycle including development, quality assurance, user acceptance testing and release
  • Learn software development in C# and Python
  • Understand web development
  • Discover organisational policies and procedures relating to the tasks being undertaken, and when to follow them. For example, the storage and treatment of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sensitive data.
Entry requirements

Every employer is different and therefore the entry requirements can vary. As a guide, you will need GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths. However, we will work with you and provide additional support to help you achieve their requirements, either prior to your apprenticeship or during the delivery of your programme.

If you are 19 or over, functional skills are not required unless requested by the apprentice’s employer.

Progression and careers

From this Level 3 ICT Apprenticeship, you can progress to a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Software Development or alternatively work full time in a software role.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already know how to code before starting the apprenticeship?

No. You do not need to be an experienced programmer, although an interest in software, coding and problem-solving is important. You will develop your programming skills throughout the apprenticeship.

What programming languages will I learn?

You will develop software development skills using languages including C# and Python. You will also explore web development and learn how different technologies are used to build applications and systems.

What will I learn about the software development process?

You will learn about the full software development life cycle, from planning and development through to testing, quality assurance, user acceptance testing and release.

Will I work on real software projects?

Yes. You will need to be employed in a suitable software role where you can apply your learning to real workplace projects. This will help you develop practical experience of working as part of a software development team.

What can I progress to after completing the apprenticeship?

You could progress into a full-time software development role or continue onto a higher-level apprenticeship, such as a Level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship. Possible careers include junior software developer, application developer or web developer.
