Creative and Professional Writing – Extend Option

This course is one of our Extend Options designed to be combined with other A Level programmes or BTEC Extended Certificate courses to make up a full timetable. If you are planning to study an A Level programme at Exeter College you will need to enrol on a four element programme, and cannot apply for this course on it’s own.

Why do this course?

If you have an interest in writing, either as a potential career or hobby that you want to pursue further, Creative and Professional Writing will provide you with the best opportunity to develop your skills and experiences, ultimately leading to publication.

What will it involve?

Whatever you’re most passionate about, this course will introduce you to each of the four major forms, with a particular focus on some of the more popular and typical genres and styles within these. For example:

Prose fiction (e.g. novel extracts, short stories, flash fiction);

Prose non-fiction (e.g. journalism, blogging, travel writing, reviews);

Poetry (e.g. free verse, performance, metrical, micro-poetry: haiku);

Script (e.g. film, radio and TV, as well as stage plays).

You will be introduced to the conventions of each approach and then have the opportunity to develop writing of your own in each of these forms.

You will also have the chance to develop your own project, allowing you to complete a small portfolio of your original work. Your strongest piece(s) will then be collated for inclusion in a course anthology and you will be invited to attend a launch event for this publication.

How might it help me in the future?

If you have ambition to see your work published and/or performed, you will work with experienced writers in honing your craft and realising those aspirations. Either way, it’s a great opportunity to build confidence, improve your written communication and enjoy expressing yourself creatively – all excellent life skills!
